Some questions that have arisen and need to be decided by the collective. :)

1. Who gets to vote for vetting? Only AH members? Anyone who sees the lists? There are existing votes by non-Ah regulars and there are pending votes via lit email from non-Ah regulars, and we need to decide what to do with them.

2. Can/should stories be removed if the author no longer participates on the AH?
Or should they be set aside and brought back for vetting when author is available again?

3. Can/should stories be removed if they are up for vetting for a certain length of time and receive no votes? (and I mean a long amount of time, not like a few weeks or anything)

4. Should number of votes be made public on the submissions?

Discuss. :)

Gonna answer my own questions.

1. I don't know on this. Part of me thinks we should just leave it open to others because frankly, the AH votes aren't exactly rolling in. Looking at the tables, it's gonna be a long long time before anything else gets vetted unless people get involved again. So accepting all vetting would really help that, but it does change the dynamic a bit.

2. I personally think they should be set aside. There aren't that many that this applies to, but there are a few (and they have multiple submissions, if I remember right). And I really do think that having such a long list is part of why the vetting process is slow. It's an overwhelming task to read through them all.

3. I think these should be set aside, too. Not poems, probably, because no one reads the damn things, but stories that have been up for vetting since the process started and still don't have any votes (or only one or two) probably aren't going to get vetted. And again, I think that the list being so long is part of the problem in vetting. (it's part of my problem anyway.

1. I'm with SJ on this one. I'm not exactly sure what to answer.

2. I say set them aside.

3. I'm not so sure about this one because there are some really good stories languishing in the lists that deserve to be vetted.

Just checked- there are 20 stories that don't have a single vote. Some of these are newer additions, but some of them have been on the list since the beginning. That's alot.

Okay, so maybe set aside those with no votes after a certain time but keep any that have at least been voted on. That would cull it some. Personally, I think the number of votes for each story should be made public. It could help some get votes. Just my opinion.

Well, I can add that to the list of questions for discussion, then. :)

My two cents, FWIW:

1. An AH participant may have a slew of non-AH readers/voters. It seems wrong to "penalize" them for this, BUT (and there's always a BUT) this is an AH project so I believe the vetting should be done by AH regulars.

(As an aside, I received a question via PM: Can any AH regular vote, even if they haven't submitted a story/poem for consideration? YES! YES! YES!)

2&3. I'm in favor of leaving the submissions lists alone. Yes, there are stories on it with no votes ... and yes, they make the list longer ... but when folks are choosing which stories to read/endorse, they just scroll through looking for known authors/titles.

(Another aside: That is why I had the tables alphabetized by author.)

:rose:

I'm sooooooooooooooo glad to see more organizational interest in this project. Warms me cockles, it does. :cathappy:

Double damn. That means I need to fix the table where I added people!

To answer question 4. I don't think so, simply because I don't want authors stressing or getting offended or having feelings hurt. Ya know? I know if I saw a story or poem of mine sitting at 0 votes or 1 vote or whatever, it would bother me a bit.

Any other opinions?

Maybe not publish the current voting status, but if an author wants to know how a particular story of their's is doing, and say its only short of one or two votes to get in, it would give a much needed kick up the arse to get them out there actively seeking votes if they were aware of this information.

Yes?

Maybe this part handled quietly by pm?? That way, if they do only have one or 2 votes, only they and the admin team will know, not the whole damn board.

My two ha'porth.

That's a good idea. And I think if an author asks via pm, there's nothing wrong with telling them- hey you're story doesn't have any votes. That way they can remove it if they want or whatever. And a kick in the arse could be pretty helpful to in seeking/publicizing their own stories.

hmmm...I am okay with accepting some vetting from non-AH folks but only under certain parameters. Tristesse is not by any means an AH regular but is VERY active on the poetry board. Would I accept her vetting on a poem?* Or Champagne's? or Boo Merengue's? HELL YES! I am confident of their judgement and their legitimacy...

Would I accept the vetting of someone who registered in Nov. 2005 and had 6 posts? no. Would I accept vetting from Aurora Black? Yes.

I am against publishing the number of votes, and I see danger in discussing who has how many.

But just to get something out there on the question of quality and ego's...I have things I have put out there for vetting with no votes. Now, I have pieces in all four volumes that are finalized. I won a Reader's Choice award. I have contest winnings and category nominations. I don't think the lack of vetting on a couple of pieces means they are bad or that someone is against me. BUT I can easily see this becoming an area where people get there feelings hurt or their ego's tweaked if we start revealing these things. Because I don't want that and because I don't want to see this turned into an unfriendly competition, I am against revealing vetting counts, even to authors.

* or story for that matter.
