I use colour ALOT. I find it has to be described. The colours my characters where have influence, the colour of their surroundings often gives emotional overtonw to the story. I love describing colours and I'm sure every story I write has alot of'em but this particular one : Artistic sights, Earthly delights

I had a "fan" who wrote an email saying very kind things about one of my stories, and then described what was was essentially a "fur fetish." It cost me nothing to write a fur rug into my next story, between the couch and the fireplace. Doing so actually paid dividends, because having the characters "do the dirty" on the fur instead of the couch added to the sensuality.
What color was that fur? Whatever color the reader wanted it to be. My "fan" had not specified, but probably had an unstated preference and image nevertheless. Not having any preference myself, I did not want to "blow it" for that or any other reader by being too specific.
It was the right call; here's what the reader said in response the story:
"We read it together in the bed and had to stop 4 times to release the pent up erotic energy in orgasms. As for the fur rug, we imagined it was a sheared mink fur . . . "
I hate to think that if I had guessed wrong and made it a long haired alpaca they would have only had to stop reading three times.

I can appreciate color, though I don't put a helluva lot of effort into weaving it into my stories. Unless, of course, it's crucial to something like describing the way creamy bum cheeks turn rosy red after a slap, or something to that effect.
I do, however, notice myself using lighting and shading a lot. I feel that light and texture add quite a lot to how well a visual is painted with words. That or I'm attempting to apply low-budget porn flick techniques to my writing. I'm not sure which.
