College

I agree on dumping the 50K per year obscure useless degrees, unless Daddy is well healed.

I'd like to see more emphasis on 2 year associate degrees in the trades and other professional or semi professional disciplines.

I find it unsurprising that you favour 2 year trade school certificates over 'obscure' degrees. Not at all surprising.

Trade schools are the ticket.

I hold 2 masters degrees plus certification in sheet metal work, welding, air conditioning/refrigeration, and auto mechanics.

Generally speaking psychology is bullshit. When I was a larval novice back in 1967 faggotry was a bonafide mental disorder, mom's made their boys schizophrenic, and every girl had multiple personalities (usually ones who fucked and smoked and drank). Sugar made kids hyperactive, no! food dyes. Etc.

But the principles of physics and chemistry and math were constant, and I got my hard science at trade school. An average welder always makes more money than a first rate community activist (negro preacher).

For perhaps 60% of high school graduates they might be, but the trades are mostly bullshite in this country now. Manufacturing is better done in Vietnam or China or Indonesia where labour is cheap.

Until you fix the dollar and deflate our economy to equal the rest of the world, teaching someone to be a machinist so he can be unemployed and bitch about his job being shopped overseas is rather pointless.

In 450 A.D. we knew that the Gods would not grant you victory in battle unless you sacrificed a goat and the smoke blew in the right direction. Why would anyone care about what was the state of psychology in 1967? Increased study adds to the knowledge base.

The guys who invented the country seemed to think that philosophy was pretty important.

"Women's studies" is just a subset of history. I think it should be offered as a graduate program for people who decide to specialize in it, like nearly every other subset of history.

My dad did okay running banks with a degree in psychology and the equivalent of an MBA. He has always said he'd hire a liberal arts major over a business major. He can teach them banking, he says, but he can't teach them critical thinking and communications and ethics.

Trades can be taught on the job. That's how I learned my job as a shipper in a warehouse, not in university. You can make a living as a glass blower, too, but I somehow don't see a big push for more glass-blowing classes. In fact, I know two people, TWO people, who make a living literally weaving baskets. Maybe we should expand the basket-weaving programs, too.

Have you seen the Longaberger basket company headquarters? Someone apparently thinks weaving baskets is a good business.

When I went to uni, your first degree was free. And you got a grant for living expenses, books and stuff. Bliar the traitor turned our university system into an "got money, get educated" system.

When I went to uni, you had to compete on academic grounds. Now it's, can you pay?

yup. it's like one professor said when i was in college, college is now a business, not an education.

Negatory; I always thought it would be sheer misery to have to run my own company.

I do not believe you, you are not dumb enough to have desired servitude as your life; you have dreamed of being free to open your own guide service or something which would let you do what you love doing while still being able to eat without visiting dumpsters.

That's exactly what I've done, without needing an accountant. I'm a part-time contractor for a bunch of different other people's headaches. They can deal with corporate politics, legal action, bookkeeping, personnel issues and all that shit. I go in, do my thing, and go back out, and get paid for it.

Who needs an accountant? I've only got one because he's my brother and the price is right. With computers and forms, the hidden secrets of accounting are no longer so secret, nor so hidden and difficult.

The only thing I hate about self employment is the higher taxes. I have to see 41.3% going away, while employees only have to see 19.65% fluttering off.

See? I didn't even need to know that I didn't need an accountant. But your choices are either do all that shit yourself or get some unsuspecting sibling rooked into it or hire someone to do it. Bleah.

I'm better off as an independent contractor. Though I think one of the places I work still treats me like a half-time employee or something. I know they withhold.

I do not withhold when I bring in an independent contractor, I just 1099 the overbilling cheat.

Hah! I can't set my own rates yet. Well, I can volunteer to get paid less whenever I want, but there's a cap...

Addressing only the text book situation.........for now.

It's a racket, an educational form of extortion. The author(s) of said text books earn 15% commission on the sale of each book. So the way the game is played is that a professor, or an ad hoc group of professors, pen a volume and then make that volume required for the course. Sort of a 'on the side' retirement plan. These are especially ripe plums to be picked should the professor(s) be in the core curricula group of subjects.

Further, several larger institutions have their own publishing group. And over the past few decades those groups have come to realize that the publishing of text material is also a rich profit center to be farmed for all it's worth.

The great majority of these texts aren't worth being used as kindling to fire up the ole Franklin stove. (In many cases they aren't even deemed to be worthy enough to be included in the schools library.)

The prices of the books are highly inflated due to the low print runs and the royalties that go to the schools publishing group and the authors.

It's not a secret.

The IRS basically tells you how to do it.

It's not like the USA is not known for inventing stupid agencies...

As a former union member I distinguish trades from factory work. The guy who places a seat inside a Chevy doesnt have a trade, he's an unskilled monkey. The woman who makes the seat has a trade....upholstery. My union categorized work as: Industrial, commercial, residential, and trained monkey. I had the industrial grade union card. Our monkeys did one task all the time....like auto workers and elevator operators. My old man was an operating engineer, he was trained to operate cranes, draglines, bulldozers, loaders, whatever.

So plumbers will always have work with good pay and benefits. Ditto for roofers. Painters. Air conditioning techs.

How you increase prosperity is with innovative technology thats popular and seriously increases productivity. Thomas Sowell played hell convincing the Chinese that one guy on a tractor was worth more than 100 guys pulling a wagon.

When I started college back in 1967 tuition was like $85 for 16 hours of courses. Today the same courses cost $3200. If tuition had kept pace with inflation the current cost would be bout $900. Books are outrageous.

I went thru college and grad school with no loans or grants, I paid cash. I couldnt do it today.

So! Looks like we're bout to the end of our chain regarding our means to pay for college. What happens when there's no more money for grants and loans, and kids cant go to college? Recall that students currently owe the government ONE TRILLION bux for delinquent loans.

This is coming from a guy who claims to have been a civil engineer but doesn't understand that turbulent liquid flow is different from linear lquid flow. This is coming from a guy who claims to have been a psychologist and says that post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is simple to treat (one session and it disappears). This is coming from a guy who claims to be able to grow vegetables...well...okay, I'm sure he can, but don't ask me to eat them. I wonder about his source of fertilizer...

College is a waste of time.

Invest the money in start-up businesses.

Cow manure, for one, and bull manure for most of your post. PTSD is easy to treat. We never discussed liquid flow.

Pay attention. You treat PTSD thisaway:

People make mind pictures of traumatic events and replay them all the fucking time.

With me so far?

People usually get over traumatic events by wearing the mind pix out. After years the pix disintegrate or lose much of their edge. This is the long hard way to cure it. The short easy way to cure it is to edit out the edgy stuff into one short sequence of pix. Then go thru it pic by pic shrinking the pic down to nuthin till it vanishes from your skull. Its also useful to play some silly songs in your head while you do this.

Lemme see if I can find a vid that demonstrates the treatment. Stay tuned.
