When I started college back in 1967 tuition was like $85 for 16 hours of courses. Today the same courses cost $3200. If tuition had kept pace with inflation the current cost would be bout $900. Books are outrageous.

I went thru college and grad school with no loans or grants, I paid cash. I couldnt do it today.

So! Looks like we're bout to the end of our chain regarding our means to pay for college. What happens when there's no more money for grants and loans, and kids cant go to college? Recall that students currently owe the government ONE TRILLION bux for delinquent loans.

I finished university with $40,000 in assorted debt and I had a scholarship for the first four years and worked part time as teaching assistant the second four.

Yes, it is expensive.

I say nationalize and make it free.

Commie.

The biggest betrayal the Labour Party ever did to the working class was Blair's embracing of Thatcher's loans and fees idea.

Nah, we're already lending most of the tuition money to everyone, already paying for almost all primary education and already eating (like jamesbigotjohnson said) hundreds of billions in bad student loans. I feel like a moron for paying my student loans, had I looked ahead I'd never have paid and waited for the amnesty.

We can just make all the state schools free and lend money only for the few students who chose to attend M.I.T. or Vassar.

Nationalizing will only create more jobs

We'd need more chancellors, presidents, assistant presidents on and on.

When I went to uni, your first degree was free. And you got a grant for living expenses, books and stuff. Bliar the traitor turned our university system into an "got money, get educated" system.

When I went to uni, you had to compete on academic grounds. Now it's, can you pay?

I got paid about 4k a semester to go to university. Plus I got a free umbrella and mug when they were recruiting me, so I really made out like a bandit.

The textbook industry is out of control. They'll print two versions of each book: one full-colour picture-packed monstrosity with online help guides and video tutorials that no ones wants or needs and one black-and-white copy without all the bells and whistles that costs about 90% less but is only available in markets outside of Europe and the US. Gouging students is mean.

He had to compromise somewhere. I think if he'd been smarter he'd have cut the military down to zero, signed a defense pact with the U.S. and funded the universities and health with the savings.

As it was, he spent all our money on sucking George Bush's cock and fucked the working classes up the arse.

Nationalizing would let every university fire 150 administrators, 200 billing personnel, 100 IT personnel, 200 HR people and a horde of other minor positions which could be filled by a Secretariat of Human Resources and perhaps an OberSecretary of Payroll Activities.

And we (and especially GW) thank you for your service.

Did I tell you I met him once? I was delivering to his charity place next to the US Embassy. I refused to shake his hand. One of his minions complained, I got called on the carpet. I said I refused to shake hands with mass murderers. No further action.

And the government has been downsizing for the past...wait...no they have been adding more and more make work morons to the payroll in order to make everyone more dependent on government.

And government has down so will at keep the costs down...wait...nope I was wrong again, they haven't. In 2000 gas was 1.85 a gallaon, now it's 3.85.

OH MY FUCKING GOD! You're RIGHT. GOVERNMENT IS BAD. Let's abolish it and everything will be cheap! Including life.

I dont see how we're gonna save the education industry when we piss away so much money every place the government is involved with.

The whole college system will eventually have to be revamped and probably split into two tiers. A small number of elite schools, such as the Ivy League schools and a few others, as high calibre traditional universities for the truly elite students, with the vast majority of other current public universities either closing or changing into something more similar to today's community colleges. Perhaps upgrade the whole post-secondary system to a three year program which builds and expands on what was taught in high school. Get rid of the useless departments, the vestiges of the middle ages such as undergrad theses, and the trappings that come from the olden days.

Emphasize math and science, and for those who choose, pre-professional programs. Separate professional programs such as engineering into a year four and five for those students who qualify (similar to what we already do with med school, law school, etc). A student could however get basic engineering in the three year community college as well, for the growing number of jobs in which such basic understanding will be useful. Get rid of all the useless ethnic studies, woman's studies, philosophy, obsure subjects, etc, from the three year revamped schools. Save that stuff for those who want to pay for it themselves after they graduate from the three year program.

If private schools wish to continue to carry on as traditional four year BA/BS institutions, they could, but the national policy would encourage them to shift to the three year basic undergrad program like the public colleges, and they could offer separate graduate programs for years four or beyond if they wish as well.

The university system has indeed become archaic and no longer suits current realities, and as you point out, we can no longer afford to maintain in the current fashion. Leaner, cheaper, and more effective should be the watchword and radical reform is definitely in order.

I agree on dumping the 50K per year obscure useless degrees, unless Daddy is well healed.

I'd like to see more emphasis on 2 year associate degrees in the trades and other professional or semi professional disciplines.

I can hear it now. The liberals will be along to call you a racist and claim only rich white kids will be able to get a degree in philosophy.

I've already been called a racist on this board, aided and abetted by Maxine Waters for the sin of opposing Obama care.....:)

good gravy..
if you're able to find 16 credit hours for $3200.. take it! That's a bargain!

Its no bargain when YOU pay the freight.

Tough choices are at hand in America. We can fund some programs adequately but not all programs. We can cut some corners but not make swiss cheese of all.

Right now the main contenders for our money are: The army, interest on the national debt, social security & medicare, ObamaCare, and K-12 schools.

So somewhere along the line youre gonna make a choice to buy health insurance for your adult kids or pay for their Community Activist Degree tuition and Summer in Chicago ACORN Internship.
