"Former student" doesn't really have much bite to it. At this point, they are merely colleagues having an affair. Better to make it a current student (maybe a grad student or post-doc) so that there is a bit more of a taboo edge to it.

At the meetings they take opposite positions - he is a libertarian who thinks adults should run their own lives without the dead hand of the administration stifling social life - she is a feminist who wants intervention to put powermongers and exploiters in their place and make sure the vulnerable are protected. They clash across the table, she heckles him on campus, they argue in tutorials, she names him online. But there is a spark - they are thrown together somehow. But in public their positions are reinforced, and their private relationship causes them to harden their stances until in public they are implacable enemies but in private the most viscerally connected fuck buddies. Let's see, maybe they had a steamy little affair back when he was her teaching assistant when he was working towards his masters. Now they're both at a conference and see one another across a crowded room. He's thirty and she's about fifty-two.
