Only recently got one, more out of curiosity than anything else. It’s latex. Can’t say it enhances anything but I did once play online with a woman who made me wear it and send her pics and videos of me cumming while wearing it, so net net a positive 🤣
 
Size really matters. If it "didn't enhance anything," it sounds like it was too big. I've tried a lot of different ones and only kept the ones which fit really well.
 
I myself have tried many, some recommended from others both here and other sites and more than a few recommended by employees from the adult stores.

Now, that is not to say that purpose-built rings can't be worth it as they most certainly can. I'm just pointing out things that are easier to get and experiment with and not feel like you're having to make a financial commitment.

I like steel for capturing my cock and balls together and rubber or silicone for pinching my shaft. A tight-ish ring just under the glans can be a lot of fun.
 
Primalrings is the one I have. Stainless with a shape made to stay close to the body.
I'm an average size guy and started with a 50mm. Worked ok, but the boys would slip out at times. Ordered a 45mm and is just right.
I wore it most of the day today and was very comfortable. Being stainless makes for easy cleaning
Not too pricey at 40 dollars.
 
I’m of the opinion that if you’re going down this road you should go ahead and lock that cock all the way up. Get you a good chastity cage.

Have you tried other materials already or would the steel one be your first?

I'd say, just don't combine an excessively-small cock ring with an ED medication. That could end in tears. But as long as you can get your balls through it, then it won't cause your boner to be permanent. It could take a while to go down after you come, but not a dangerously long while.

I've had metal rings on which seemed wildly tight, like really too small and quite painful when erect, but never felt like there was a danger of not being able to eventually get it off after the play was done.

It is well worth it to try enough different ones to figure out what the right size is for you, so, consider doing this with other, more forgiving materials before spending the money on a metal one, once you think you have it figured out. Even then, it could be worth it to try more than one and see which size really seems right.

Getting one that's a lot too small is an avoidable risk. Getting one that's a little too small isn't really risky, at least not to an ER level of risk.
