So whilst buying a new cheap coffee pot at that chain store that kills small business (since it's the only place to buy one within 20 miles of me) I took a stroll down the movie aisle to see what was available.

Passing by numerous titles I saw one I had caught previews for but never got to see.

Now I am not normally one for new new dvd releases (as the price drops significantly over time) but Tom Hanks + A Matrix brother + Halle + time jumps is all win for me.

So I bought Cloud Atlas without ever having seen it.

It definately has a Slaughterhouse Five feel to it, though not nearly as easy to follow.

Awesome. Loved it. Box office flops these days have more to do with economy than watchability.
Only $28 million?

Also, turns out it's based on a novel?

Should have seen it in the theaters..... fail on my part.

Also: Hugh Grant as a cannibal king? Awesome.

Fair warning, there's a bit of a gay romance, but it works for a straight guy (just turn your head at the one kiss in the beginning) + There are moments of very Britishness so I don't think it's for the anti colonal types :D

Intellegent + pro.

I went to the cinema for similar reasons - Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, a best-selling book and a mega million $$$ production budget. What could possibly go wrong?

Well, in my opinion they blew it.

Oh, the movie is beautifully shot and the acting is top notch, but alas it's... well... "boring." Plain and simple. Not because they didn't try, but I'm not sure that it's even possible to fit a metaphysical epic tale like Cloud Atlas into the frame of a normal movie.

Luckily taste differs and it's great that you liked it. But I'm afraid I can't second your recommendation.

Sucks. I heard people say the same thing about the Matrix when it came out. Valid complaint.

I loved the book! I cannot recommend it enough, fun read. I have yet to see the movie though, I only caught glimpses of it on a red-eye recently, but I was in that mind-numbing place of ultimate boredom that long airplane rides take you to.

I like you saw the movie in store and thought it looked like something I would really enjoy.

The time jumps forwards and backwards were way to confusing and the end left me feeling like I had been lectured (rather than entertained) about the social dilemma's of each age from a moral high ground.

It's rare I am as disappointed in a movie as I was with this one.
Glad you liked it though, if we all liked the same things the world wouldn't be nearly as interesting. :D

I loved it.

It was a movie where I just felt good and exhausted afterward. Any movie where I spend longer than the movie itself thinking about the movie, is a good thing.

I loved the movie, but I love box office flops. Its a good thing I don't make movies, because I'd have a whole string of them to my credit.

Loved the book but I think they made a mistake having each actor play 5-6 different parts. Halle Berry made up to look like an old Korean man, and the like, were extremely distracting, and the actors couldn't pull it off. Parts of it were wonderful, but as a whole? Interesting failure.

I liked the movie, and I loved seeing where the actors would pop up next. It was a masterwork of Fx makeup, at the very least.
