Clothes Shopping...The Horror! The Horror

I do not like shopping for clothes at the best of times. The fact that I'm a body type that always has trouble finding something that fits right, never mind looks good, has made clothes shopping a depressing business.

It's also given me a somewhat objective eye for what's in and popular. I'm appalled by the designs this year. Utterly appalled. And it's not just because I can't wear them. I've admired a lot of styles that I hadn't hope in hell of pulling off. But what I'm seeing in the department stores this year....

 Yikes! It was like the designers all got together and said: Let's make tops and dresses that won't look good on ANY woman out there. Not one! First thing they did was go for the high-waisted, baby-doll look. That's this sort of top--clinch under the beasts let flow below:

http://slimages.macys.com/is/image/MCY/products/1/optimized/394841_fpx.tif?bgc=255,255,255&wid=167&qlt=90,0&layer=comp&op_sharpen=0&resMode=bicub&op_usm=0.7,1.0,0.5,0&fmt=jpeg

There are some women who can pull this off and look very cute in it. Unfortunately, those who can't look preggers. And if you've any kind of bust, forget it. There's no room at the top for it. So half the women out there are going to look awful in this fashion. What about the rest? We have to make them look bad too. Well, say the designers, why don't we go for big garish prints and patterns? We'll make everyone woman look like she's wearing a Hawaiian shirt or moo-moo!

Oh, and for good measure, let's bring back poka dots. Cause women look so beautiful in poka dots

http://slimages.macys.com/is/image/MCY/products/1/optimized/399111_fpx.tif?bgc=255,255,255&wid=167&qlt=90,0&layer=comp&op_sharpen=0&resMode=bicub&op_usm=0.7,1.0,0.5,0&fmt=jpeg

That creates stuff that's going to look horrible on all but the handful of women who can pull off empire waists and big, flashy prints (or poka dots). But there are a few. How can we make them look awful? I know! Let's make the colors for Summer sherbet colors! Most especially, ORANGE! Cause almost no one looks good in orange sherbet.

http://slimages.macys.com/is/image/MCY/products/5/optimized/394785_fpx.tif?bgc=255,255,255&wid=167&qlt=90,0&layer=comp&op_sharpen=0&resMode=bicub&op_usm=0.7,1.0,0.5,0&fmt=jpeghttp://slimages.macys.com/is/image/MCY/products/8/optimized/380218_fpx.tif?bgc=255,255,255&wid=167&qlt=90,0&layer=comp&op_sharpen=0&resMode=bicub&op_usm=0.7,1.0,0.5,0&fmt=jpeg

Orange sherbet. The hot color for summer. Let's put them all together and make something special for a plus-sized woman:

Are you kidding me? Are you fucking kidding me? Big splashy prints? Poka dots? Orange?

Am I wrong or is this one of the worst summers for clothing ever?

Agree completely. I got a gift card to my "favorite" cheap ladies' clothing store for Mothers' Day -- and had a tough time finding anything I liked. I ended up just accessorizing. :)

An essentially similar fashion dilemma plagued every female past the age of 30 in the 1960's and the 1970's.

However these designs look particularly unflattering even on those stick figure models.

Are we outsourcing our clothing designing to Lower Slobbovia?

Just wonderin'...;)

Ouch. Not even the models can make those things look good.

Yep. Completely agree.

Daughter is maturing rapidly, and becoming very busty, bless her heart.

Nothing looks right.

For promotion ceremonies and for her school dance we finally found short sleeved sweaters in summer colors - lilac, green, peach - to go with skirts.

She's staying with comfortable T-shirts and shorts until this ridiculous trend passes.

That orange sherbet color is like a half step away from peach, which, aside from mauve, is the worst clothing color in the world. It's also horrible on walls, furniture, throw pillows, and (God forbid!) cars.

I'm in luck as orange is a colour that works for me (I'll have to provide AV evidence I know *L*) but generally I've not been impressed with what I've seen in the shops either.

I HATE clothes and shoe shopping, though.

One good thing, though. I've noticed a lot of red, which I like, especially for summer. It's so nice with white and denim.

I wanna see you in orange!

I don't do 'current fashion.' I just... no. The classics for me (jeans and teeshirts, really)-- and Good Will is the place to find most things.:)

Might this portend the return of the sewing machine? Just askin' ya'know . . .

Wife started sewing her own again 5 years ago. Does things for our daughters and grandkids too. Her things are better looking and better made thjan anything in a store.
Just altered a bridesmades dress for a friend of one daughter.

So called "fashion" is a joke!

What she said.

The few occasions I go anywhere where I'm required to dress up (ie, jeans are not suitable) I have a couple of dresses I picked up in end of season "get these things out of my shop NOW" sales.

By golly, you're right. Your British complexion and that color orange look like sherbert with raspberry sauce. Yum!

I wear orange well, too. Oolive-complexion looks horrible in "summer" colors like yellow, though. I end up looking jaundiced.

This is a strange thread. Most of the women that I know or have known actually enjoy shopping, especially for clothing and shoes. Personally, I consider it to be a chore that has to be done occasionally, but I have never liked doing it. I have especially hated shopping, for clothing or anything else, with the women in my life:(

My idea of shopping is "open catalog, go to website, click, pay". And finding a parking place is a breeze. :D

I hate shopping too

I totally agree! @ have a big ass, which makes it hard.also, the styles are either for a young 20something or an elderly grandmom.i am in my late 30's,and consider myself to have a decent fashion sense.i managed retail stores for quite a few years.am glad that I don't have to try and market this crap, much less make sale quotas! I teach jr high.none of the pants are high enuff in the back...the girls lean over and everything falls out.yuck.

I hate dragging the men in my life-- or anyone at all-- with me if I must shop.

My daughter loves shopping for herself, but of course at 19, knowing you look good in everything-- what's not to like? I like to take her shopping, as long as the stores have chairs somewhere! But my fashion priorities are just not the same as hers are.

I think you and your 19-year-old and me and my almost-16-year-old would make a good shopping team ;)

So long as there are chairs and sufficient lighting for my book I, too, can be dragged along. Just don't expect any relevant comments on the purchases. ;)
