The column on the left of forum lists show envelopes beside each thread title. The ones showing a closed envelope with a lock on it. Those threads can be read to the point they were closed by Laurel, but then they are closed for additions.

Since then I've watched other people get slapped around, and did a post on it recently. I'm not talking about JBJ's "zinger" style - his insults amount to an artform, pretty much anyone can be a target and they mean as much as morning dew on grass. It's comic. But there are folk here who take everything personally, and others who make everything personal.

JBJ is one of the worst trolls across Lit. There is no one who reaches his level of abuse or hate for women and non-whites. That you would call what he does an "artform," is ridiculous.

But that's just Laurel, giving herself the rights to moderate this forum, which she always had as Admin, not instead of a user name of Admin showing up, the AHMod id will. It's all a ploy. Plus she can give the password for that user to anyone else she feels would be fair and unbalanced.

As I mentioned earlier, you have to separate the message from the wordcraft. JBJ used to make a steady income selling "quips" (clever sayings) to a game maker or something. (I don't exactly remember the entity what was buying them.) The point is, his "zingers" could be part of a late night comedian's monologue if he chose to go that route. Instead, he trolls the AH.

Years ago, before I changed my screen name, I would get thoroughly offended by his offensive remarks. Now I just laugh. There's no denying it - the guy has a way with words. As an aspiring wordsmith, I respect that, even if the message is tasteless and hateful most of the time.

I say whats on my mind. Most people are scripted and stick to their roles. Mine is a prescription for unpopularity. The local paper tossed me out after I made fun of the alcoholic ambulance chaser who bought banners on the board. Anything pisses people off, so you can talk or pretend to be dead.

I can appreciate the wordcraft of a song with a lame message without embracing the message of the song. I admit to enjoying some of JBJ's antics. Not the racist, sexist homphobe shitstain routine, but...

His insults and snark here have a certain flare to them and he manipulates people like an internet pied piper, he lays it down, the rats follow.

But I come from a family where sarcasm is the family past time and awards are gievn at holidays for best insults and come backs.

I can also take it and will admit to a good one even if its at my expense, many people can't do that, so JB is an acquired taste.

I was thinking of his book reviews and links to articles about writing and articles about authors. He seems to be one of the few people here willing to post about his interests in reading and writing. Judging from some of his posts, his knowledge of writing doesn't come from "10 minutes spend on the AH", it comes from reading more books than most of us will ever read in a lifetime, and reading books about writing and writers, and from the actual writing he was doing for a living - at least according to a recent post.

BTW, he has dinged me in the past, and I'm sure he'll ding me in the future. I don't take it personally. It's just a game for him - entertainment - just like being the AH hall monitor and grammar/Chicago Manual of Style cop is entertainment for you. You both bring knowledge to the AH, and that's what we're here for - or at least, that's what we're supposed to be here for.
