Has anybody else noticed anything weird about the site clocks and timings?

For instance, I made a post on a board this afternoon and it shows as having been posted last night. I submitted a story this morning and it tells me that I submitted it 21 hours ago.

I've seen glitches like that now and then. I just chalk them up as ignorable.

Might have something to do with timezones. For some reason, IT folks always have trouble getting timezones to coordinate. Server in one timezone, database in another, user in a third. Apparently it's tricky getting them to agree.

In the past I have sometimes had the publication date or time listed as wrong. But it's not common.

It could also be the clock on your PC (or whatever device you are using) is not set to your time zone. This can happen if you take your laptop with you on vacation, for example.

It may or may not be that that the site runs on a different timezone than the one stated in your lit user's 'my options'. It's on that page where you can change your email and password etc.

My timezone is set different from EST so I also see some strange things when it comes to time.

I don't know if I'm making any sense I am still at my first cup of coffee for the day.

Not really. You just have to use one, for example Greenwich. You convert everything to it and then, locally, you convert back to the user's timezone. You can either do it client-side with JS or server-side. In the latter case, problems can arise if, for some reason, you communicate your timezone incorrectly.
Sometimes I have the feeling that this website has traces of DIY in it, which explains some of its quirks (like not being able to remove a story with just a button). I assume it is because it started that way many years ago and only later, when it really grew, it has been refactored in something professional, but not completely.
Anyone else has this feeling?

It sure SEEMS like it should be that easy. But I've lost track of the number of times organizations I've worked for have (for example) updated their remote database software to discover a change in the timekeeping settings that no longer corresponds to the settings on the cloud server so all the date stamps have gone wonky until they can fix it.

In IT, the important things are all very simple, and the simple things are very hard. Or something like that.

Watch this man slowly go insane as he explains the trouble of working with time in programming. As a programmer myself, I can confirm that this is accurate. (no knowledge of programming required to understand the video)

Time warp

If you want to know the real reason, here it is: We are all in a time warp due to global warming. If we don't kill the cows and stop them from farting the whole time-continuum will soon collapse and we will all drift into the future one day at a time.

I don't believe the issue is at my end, for I am seeing the same thing on both laptop and iPad. Not a big problem. I was just curious.

Mind you, maybe this is why my hair is going grey so quickly...

Down at the bottom of the page is the current GMT +- your time zone as set in your options.

All times are GMT -5. The time now is 09:36 AM.

Recently, I noticed that the settings related to timezones was different in two sets of options. I think it was that the Forum (with the tired layout) had my correct timezone, while the submissions control panel (with the pretty new formatting) had one a couple of hours out. I was poking around in all the settings, trying to change a description in my forum posting signature....but I can't find the differences now. Maybe you've got the same inconsistency but more extreme differences in timezones.

I generally find the time stamps confusing, because as ElectricBlue66 says, we are all ahead of the curve down here.

Your forum and writer's account are (as far as I can tell) completely separate. Settings made on one won't affect the other, so it makes sense you can have two different timezones set.

I believe it IS a time-zones problem.
I believe that some space gear got snaggled as a result of nobody remembering the two nations may not have the same time reference. . .

Of course, if all times were taken at some standard time (UTC-0, perhaps), it might not be quite so confusing.

Maybe don't log onto Lit while you are aboard the Tardis?

If you log in, you'll get time based on the time zone your computer is set to. If you just drop in unlogged, you get GMT at the time of the post.
