"Some of us may stay, especially my father. We've come this far because there simply is no safety between here and home. We could've gone to the Himalayas or the southern end of Africa... But father heard of the sanctuary offered in the north. Anywhere else would've been a gamble. Even as large and powerful as he is, he knows that all it takes is a few scared villages to get a king to send men after us... It was either that risk, or be pressed into military service by Emperor Barbarossa or his allies or one of his desperate enemies."

"Once Invah is here, she and her husband will explain everything." Fiona said as she took a seat to wait for her dragon to arrive.

"We've heard of her supporting this place... Some friends of ours have come this way, though we don't know if they made it." She watched Sam race out of sight, and it wasn't long before Invah and Gaiann came rising into the sky, Sam on Gaiann's back without a saddle.

They landed nearby and Invah came trotting out to Fiona as Orion stepped forward once more. "I didn't realize anyone flew over," Invah said softly. "Welcome, my friends."

Fiona took a step back to let Invah welcome them as they were obviously more comfortable around a dragon than a human. She stood aside to wait until she could provide more assistance to the group.

The conversation drifted into Latin and Sam came to join Fiona's side still looking exhausted. "After this, we're goin' back t'bed," he muttered, wrapping his cloak around her.

"We can go to my house. Will is still gone on patrol. I'll even make us lunch when we wake." Fiona said, leaning into his warm chest as he came to her side and wrapped his cloak around her.

Finally Orion faced Fiona, leaning down to look her in the eye. "Caller," he murmured. "My children will go north for now, but I will stay and await a Rider."

"I will let the others know then. We will find you someone." Fiona said as the dragon addressed her directly. "Until then, you are free to stay near Inverness or with Invah in the loch. We will help to feed you."

"I can look after myself," Orion insisted. He wasn't trying to be rude, but it was clear his distrust of strangers and his self-sufficient lifestyle made him unwilling to accept help. Oriana gave Fiona an apologetic glance as Orion turned away to look after his fledglings.

"Of course." Fiona said as she the dragon turned his back to her and tended to his children. "Invah, if you are going to stay with them, Gaiann can take Sam and I home."

"Go ahead. Get some rest," Invah murmured, leaning down to nuzzle Sam and Fiona. Orion took notice but didn't speak. "See if you can find some good drake riders that might be able to work with Orion."

"We will be on the look out." Fiona said as they turned to climb back onto Gaiann's back, letting him take them as close to Inverness as he could.

Gaiann ended up flying all the way to Fiona's home, making a very slow landing in the street as there was no one out yet. He would walk out and take off again in a more open space. "Rest well, kids," he murmured as he helped them down.

"I'll make you and Invah something to eat tonight as a thanks." Fiona said as she stood in the yard, giving Gaiann a smile as Sam finally joined her. "Name your poison."

"I don't think you could make enough to feed us, my love. But if you like, we can catch a few deer and roast them." He nuzzled her arm.

"That sounds like a plan." Fiona said as Gaiann nuzzled against her before she and Sam moved to enter her house.

She was soon undressed, in her night clothes and in her bed. Her pillow had never felt better than it did in that moment.

Sam was close behind, carelessly throwing aside all but his trousers before collapsing into bed beside her. He only shifted once to pull the blanket over them before he was out.

Fiona curled against Sam as they slept, her arm wrapping around his chest as if she could get even closer doing that. She slept soundly until lunch time, her eyes finally opening as the room was bathed in full, warm light.

"I love you." She whispered to Sam, leaning in to kiss him before she got up to make them a meal.

Sam grumbled unintelligibly, pulling Fiona back into bed against him, barely opening his eyes as he pressed a kiss to her neck and held her in place.

"You have to let me go if you want food." Fiona whispered as Sam held her tightly, refusing to let her get too far away.

"Nah," he grumbled, hugging her closer. "I don' want t'get up..." It took some serious exhaustion to make Sam lazy. Between their incredibly late night and his battle with anger and depression, he was incredibly tired.

Fiona chuckled as he said that. "You don't have to get up. You have to let me up." She said, kissing him again.

"Nope," he muttered again, returning her kiss with a bit more energy just like the days they'd spent together before her trip to Sweden, when they would make love in the mornings before they tended to their own business for the day. He would keep her in bed a little too late and they'd do whatever they liked with each other.

"I'll make your favorite. Even if I have to go to the market." Fiona whispered as he pulled her even closer, refusing to let her out of bed for even a moment.

With a hand pressed to her belly, he kissed her throat once more. "Stay a little longer," he muttered.
