INCOME. Real inflation-adjusted wages of American workers have been STAGNANT since 1989 -- the economy has GROWN a lot since then, but only the plutocrats get the benefit.
And the right of a mother / parents NOT to bring a life into the world, and the right of an individual to end their life on their terms.
But NOT freedom from consequences of their speech.
and freedom FROM religion
Sounds nice in theory.
And the lengths that government should go to “to protect those rights and liberties” should be based on the realities and requirements of the times.
“Limited” based on the realities and requirements of society at particular moments in time (it is NOT 1776 anymore).
The problem with assigning a label like “classical liberal / liberalism” is that it’s too restrictive and starts from a confined position.
“Pragmatic progressive liberal” is how I would label myself.

I retired over a decade ago in my early 50s with significant liquidity and multiple income streams from retirement accounts.
I didn’t get into real estate because I’M RETIRED, and fucking around with real estate is too much like WORK. (I also saw a wealthy peer lose everything - including their family and their mind - when some real estate investments didn’t pan out).

I'm not at all surprised that people who identify as "progressives" would be skeptical of certain aspects of classical liberalism, or would distance themselves from some of its principles. What's interesting to me, though, is the apparent decline in "liberal" self-identification on the right. It wasn't that long ago -- 12 years, say -- when someone like Paul Ryan, the former Speaker of the House and one time VP candidate for the Republicans, would have been considered a typical "Ronald Reagan-style" Republican. Ryan identified as a conservative but spoke often in classical liberal terms. Now, he's considered a RINO, and that sort of rhetoric has been replaced by Trump-style nationalism and populism. There's relatively little classical liberal thought in this forum that I can see. Instead, lots of MAGA folks and anti-MAGA folks slinging the insults back and forth.
