Professionalism. Respect. *sigh*

Where have these things gone?

I'll share lyrics from the Chicago soundtrack - Catherine Zeta Jones and Queen Latifah singing "Class."

This is suiting my mood for the evening.

MATRON (Queen Latifah) (Spoken)
The whole world's gone low-brow. Thing's ain't what they used to be.

VELMA (Catherine Zeta Jones) Spoken)
They sure ain't, Mama. They sure ain't - it's all gone.

(Singing) Whatever happened to fair dealing?
And pure ethics? And nice manners?
Why is it everyone now is a pain in the ass?
Whatever happened to class?

MATRON
Class.
Whatever happened to, "Please, may I?"
And, "Yes, thank you?"
And, "How charming?"
Now, every son of a bitch is a snake in the grass
Whatever happened to class?

VELMA AND MATRON
Class!
Ah, there ain't no gentlemen
To open up the doors
There ain't no ladies now,
There's only pigs and whores
And even kids'll knock ya down
So's they can pass
Nobody's got no class!

VELMA
Whatever happened to old values?

MATRON
And fine morals?

VELMA
And good breeding?

MATRON
Now, no one even says "oops" when they're
Passing their gas
Whatever happened to class?

VELMA
Class

VELMA AND MATRON
Ah, there ain't no gentlemen
That's fit for any use
And any girl'd touch your privates
For a deuce

MATRON
And even kids'll kick your shins and give you sass

VELMA
And even kids'll kick your shins and give you sass

VELMA AND MATRON
Nobody's got no class!

VELMA
All you read about today is rape and theft

MATRON
Jesus Christ, ain't there no decency left?

VELMA AND MATRON
Nobody's got no class!

MATRON
Every guy is a snot!

VELMA
Every girl is a twat!

MATRON
Holy shit

VELMA
Holy shit

MATRON
What a shame

VELMA
What a shame

VELMA AND MATRON
What became of class?

I need a drink.

In a society as obsessed with 'success' as much of ours is, class is a barrier.

So, like ethics, empathy and similar finer human traits, they are dropped as 'unprofitable' and 'unrealistic'.

Sigh.

It amazes me to see children now that don't know the very simplest of manners: Please and Thank you.

I'm not nearly as strict as my own parents on manners, but I won't do a damn thing for mine unless they ask nicely and use "please." And, I stand by with that mama look until I get a "thank you" when it's done.

My husband thinks I overdo it. I disagree.

I disagree as well.

Courtesy is the lubrication that society requires.

Any machine not properly lubricated will very quickly break down.

It already is.
I've never seen so many badly behaved, selfish, rude and verbally abusive kids in my life. They're everywhere. Still a minority, but its growing.

My kids' teachers always -- always -- comment on how polite my kids are. They just say 'please' and 'thank you' -- that's all. So simple.

I know, but that often makes me want to ask "Who are these children and what have you done with my kids?"

Thats something I truely havent understood. I tend to hold people that have "class" to a higher standard. I would think that would rollover in other aspects of their lives (i.e. others think the same way I do), making them even more successful. The problem is, we see success as dollar driven.

A person with class doesnt, he/she are content with what they have and expand in both a generous nature ignoring the other definition of "class," in which all social groups are perceived as equals. I remember Rodney Dangerfield in the film, "Head of the Class," he was pissy rich, but didnt treat anyone else as less, except those with the superiority complexes.

I have tried to fashion myself along those lines (except I havent managed the money part yet), in tandem with Pip (Great Expectations) desire to "become a gentlemen." Surprisingly, I have that non-succesful result.

I am more polite, courteous, and friendly than most, working through problems rather than losing my temper. I am thought of well by others. And I am stuck. For some reason, I am stranded in an economic position that is difficult to move forward from, with an expanding family, gas prices, etc, it becomes frustrating.

Now I'm ranting about myslef, so I'll stop. I need a good Airplane quote...
