Just wondering if ya'll know of know of nicknames Cities have earned over the years. Everyone knows that New York is the Big Apple and Atlanta is routinely called Hotlanta. I've heard Nashville referred to as NashVegas and Hillbilly Hollywood. Any others?

Some

Chi-town, La La Land, Bean Town, Cow Town, Windy City, Where Old Elephants Go To Die -

Bout all I can come up with right now.

Canadian ones; Hog Town, The Big Smoke, The City with the heart of gold, Gaurdian of the North,

St. Louis - Gateway to the West
Baltimore - Charm City (I don't know who's definition of charm they are using though)

Believe it or not.....

I love Baltimore and plan to retire there - no shit! People think I'm crazy but here's why.......

I'm a city boy. I like to walk to - get my food, get my movies, go to the neighborhood dive bar.

I don't need a big house and hate yard/lawn work - in B-more you can still get a little town home, right on the water of the inner harbor in Fells Point which is really nice for well under $200K. Right across the street for the Police Station in Homicide.

I like boating and salt water. And blue fin crab. Great sea food all around. I can keep a boat there for cheep. And park an old Ford pick-up right outside my door.

It's cheep city living there - good cheep restaurants.

B-more is an old traditional East Coast city in that it has neighborhoods - Polish, Italian etc., I like the diversity.

It's central to most of my relatives.

Easy, coastal, city living.

I live near the Little Apple. *sigh*

And the Home of the Big Red 1, who left.

Sparky my man, have at it. I'm looking at a piece of land with water running through it, mineral rights, oil rights, and timber rights, oh, somewhere around 400 acres, with a 4 bedroom 3 bath house for about $65,000.

Of course, try and find a job near there without a good satellite internet connection.

We won't walk, we'll be riding the hosses. Git along lil doggies.

You can keep it Sparky.

I got a parking ticket there once. Thing is, I was 350 miles away in N.C. at the time the ticket was written. The only way to contest the ticket was to drive 700 miles round trip and take it to court. To add insult to injury, the notice was postmarked a day after the fine was due. Again, the only way to fight the late fee was in court. Everyone I dealt with over this was rude and incompetent.

Charm City, my foot.

There's loads:

Philadelphia - City of Brotherly Love, The Big Scrapple
Memphis - Bluff City
Cincinnatti - Queen City
New Orleans - Crescent City, The Big Easy
LA - City of Angels, Tinseltown, El Lay
San Francisco - The City
Denver - Mile High City
Chicago - City of the Big Shoulders
Pittsburgh - Steel City
Dallas - The Big D
Nashville - Music City
Cleveland - Mistake by the Lake

Had enough?

Damn, just the thought of Baltimore brings up unpleasant thoughts, and has made me mildly depressed.

Las Vegas - Sin City
Little Rock - Hell on Earth
San Bernardino - San Berdoo or Down Below
(that's for all you living in A.V.)
That's all I can think of.

Detroit- MotorCity

Ann Arbor- A2

Kalamazoo- Laughter and people say get real does it exist??

Beat-up little seagull
On a marble stair
Tryin' to find the ocean
Lookin' everywhere

Hard times in the city
In a hard town by the sea
Ain't nowhere to run to
There ain't nothin' here for free

Hooker on the corner
Waitin' for a train
Drunk lyin' on the siewalk
Sleepin' in the rain

And they hide their faces
And they hide their eyes
'Cause the city's dyin'
And they don't know why

Oh, Baltimore
Man, it's hard just to live
Oh, Baltimore
Man, it's hard just to live, just to live

Get my sister Sandy
And my little brother Ray
Buy a big old wagon
To haul us all away

Live out in the country
Where the mountain's high
Never comin' back here
'Til the day I die

Oh, Baltimore
Man, it's hard just to live
Oh, Baltimore
Man, it's hard just to live, just to live

Despite that Chicago has been dubbed the "windy city", Omaha has been proven to be more windy. :) Omaha has also been called the "Big O", different parts of the city are called "North O", "South O", "West O"... As the Counting Crows have once said in a song, "Omaha...somewhere in MIDDLE America". :)

big cities only?

well, Chicago either Chi-town or the Windy City (because the politicians were so long-winded) and Lake in the Hills ( a burb) is Lake in the Hood...

New York was the Big Easy, or so I thought...
Hollywood (or L.A.) is Tinseltown
New Orleans is Mardi Party
Vegas is the Land of Losin Money
Motown is... gods, I don't remember!

LMAO!! Motown is a nickname. Not sure what for, though. Detroit, I think. New York is The Big Apple or Gotham. New Orleans has always been The Big Easy.

Indianapolis--Nap Town or Circle City (as the C of C prefers)

Madison, WI--Madtown

You see, I get confused. New Orleans- lived there for a year. New York- lived there for about 6 months.

Here are a few from New Mexico

1) Los Alamos--Lost Almost
2) Santa Fe-Sani-Flush
3) Albequrque-Albaturkey
4) White Sands--Fright lands
5) Hobbs--Probes
6) Las Cruces--Lost Crucibles
7) Elephant Butte Lake--Elephant Butt Lake
8) Tucumcari---You Cum Cari?

Motown is the name of a certain famous record company located in Detroit a/k/a The Motor City.

*Close enough LOL* ;) (((April))) Is it bad to encourage you to run away? Is it worse to say it out loud? in public? *fly free lil butterfly*. Sorry, sad Piglets are against the law! :D

Huh? It's late and I'm confused. You do that a lot, you know. Confuse people.

*Do NOT!* <----- stamping feet. Just you and Ex. Therein also lies the answer. *blink*

Short no good? Let's go for long...

Remember the other day when I was sad and said it was my turn to Eeyore around and you were in a *up* mood and decided to be Piglet, who is always ebulient? (Rhetorical question for those playing along at home).

I was confused about this, specifically. And, yes, I've been moody lately. I've gotten to really hate weekends. I've also got a lot on my mind.

Almost forgot that one! And Milwaukee is the Cream City.
Named, I believe, for the cream colored bricks used to build many buildings in the early years. They are very prized items now, very expensive if you can recycle the bricks from an old building and use them to build a new one.
