Christianity.

Unlike Judaism, most of us have to suffer through some public manifestation of Christianity though - I mean blue laws don't keep me from buying beer on MY shabbos. So people blow off steam from their experience of this. It's not the same thing as saying "God you're an asshole for believing this."

My feeling is that unless someone attacks me personally, that humor is always good. I firmly believe that Jesus had a wonderful sense of humor, and could probably poke fun at himself along with the next person.

Beyond that, as I've said, I don't particularly care what people think about my beliefs. I don't care if they want to make fun of it. And from what I've seen on here, people have no problems poking fun at themselves. I remember once Etoile humorously remarking that being an atheist didn't stop her from yelling for God when she had an orgasm.

I come at this from a different perspective, because I know a lot of people who bash on religion constantly. And constantly wonder aloud, why oh why would anyone be religious? And then go to a yoga class that begins with chanting. Okay.

The influence of Christianity on our laws is frustrating, certainly. But Christians aren't a monolithic group, and certainly not all of them want that intersection.

I saw this card for Purim, shit, shoulda bought it.

A history of the Jewish People.

They tried to kill us. They didn't kill us.
We ate.

Happy Holidays.

I agree. You should be reading this book too, let's have a book club.

*snicker* Now THAT'S funny. I once heard an explanation of the parody defense - it works when the judge gets the joke.

Of course he did and could. He was Jewish. We're known for that.

Chris Hedges has an interesting new book out. It places Dawkins Atheism and radical fundamentalism at the same dangerous point of a continuum, most people in their varying levels of belief and agnosticism on the other end. I just saw it in B+N and came close to getting it.

I still would never tell my friend, who survived Mormon upbringing and is gay, that his "Jesus, the other white meat" T shirt is bad form.

Totally missed this! Interesting, ver interesting.

As to your friend. Yeah, context is everything, right?

For the record, I'm not an atheist, I just thought that the picture was funny.

A Middle Eastern Jewish Zombie that is always depicted as a white hippie.

LMAO!

Good one!

BTW, here in the good ole bible belt, red neck central, they make fun of "hippies" but hey, they are VERY religious, go figure . . .

Man. Don't get me started on that one. Nothing ticks me off more than pictures of Jesus with blonde hair, blue eyes, and fair skin. I mean, for Gods sake, he was a Jew and he lived in a hot climate. I seriously doubt he was blonde, blue eyed and fair skinned! GET A GRIP PEOPLE!

Reminds me of a joke, though.

A black man and a white man are standing at the gates to heaven, good naturedly arguing about whether Jesus is black or white. The gates to heaven open up and Jesus steps through and says . . .

"Hola, Senor."

*giggles*

I love atheists! Although I rarely meet any hardcore atheists. Many celebrate Christmas, that wonderful "American" holiday, because it makes them feel good and they like the ritual. But religion is horrible. Nothing good, like I don't know, ritual and community, comes from religion. Nope. Not a thing.

Well, I did hug Mister Man's doggies very tightly, but they totally consented. I think.

Mwah ha. Good one.

You know what I don't like about Atheists? They are so often PISSED OFF! I mean seriously, the world is what it is. Get a clue.

I personally don't want to go through life mad as a hornet and fighting with folks all the time but if they feel a need I guess that's okay.

This happens to many who feel persecuted and targeting though and I get that.

I do see a lot of good coming out of some religions. Churches in our community provide free meeting places for many fine organizations. They do a lot of charity. They can be great places to socialize.

Religion is of course the opiate of the masses. It helps people deal with their lots in life. For some that's a way to deal with being poor, being sick, loss of loved ones and more. That's important.

Even better, I've had more than one person tell me that going to church keeps them from killing their families. They seemed quite serious. I told them that's great! Keep going. I meant it!

Of course I could argue that religion has done much harm as well. There are at least two sides to every story, after all.

I actually just don't think it's funny. It seems incredibly ignorant and obnoxious. I've seen similar things written about kosher laws and Judaism. Well, my entire culture and religion can't be reduced to 'don't eat shellfish.'

For all the praise of the virtue of open-mindedness around these parts, I'm amazed by how insulting people can be on a regular basis. Not you, Jade, or even Betticus. Just speaking more broadly. It's wrong to criticize dog-lovers, wink wink, and yet, Christians are clearly idiots. Because there could never be a bigger reason for being Christian, than the literal text of the Bible. They must all just be delusional.

I never said all Christians are clearly idiots and I never will say that. I simply don't feel that way. However a good many of them are close minded and irritating but that is true of most groups of humans.

I'd have to say that I disagree with Chris Hedges. Most of the ills of the world have come from following the god called Profit.

Often various religions have actively participated in these things for their own gain. Often too motives have been cloaked in "righteousness."

Almost every war started has been based on money in the history of our world and yes, sometimes mixed with religion.

Are there still blue laws around? I always hated those!

I've lived in communities where everything closed down from sundown Friday to sundown Saturday too.

I hate it either way.

Meaty Marxist analysis, I never object to some of that, nope.
Religion is a GREAT tool to use to get people to get you stuff.

Still, Marxist atheists are really good at genocide when the religion-drugged masses aren't giving the stuff up quick enough.

I have no issue with Atheists who just don't believe, like I have no issue with (insert religion here) who just do believe and get on with it. It's dogma and tribalism that creep me out - when Atheists get together and make it like a dogmatic church I'm very WTF.
