Christian Fundamentalist Terrorism

Some people who claim to be Christian never managed to get beyond "Thou Shalt Not . . . " Whereas once you get to the New Testament . . . well, Doonesbury says it well.

Apparently some of these folk didn't even get that far!

Thou shall not kill (doesn't specify embryonic folk or Dr.s)

A quote from a friend;
St. Augustine believed in delayed ensoulment and said that abortion destroyed only a body, not a soul. St. Jerome said that abortion was only a sin after all the parts and limbs had been formed. Pope Innocent III said that killing a fetus was only murder if the fetus was animated. Man, it was only in the 1800's that the church decided that abortion was murder, so this great infallible church was it wrong back then or wrong now?

Note that the fundies are using the catholic church as the basis for their beliefs about abortion. Most of those guys also believe that the RC is Satan on earth...

related:

I recently saw (again) a bumper sticker, which is presumably pro-choice>

"If you can't trust me with a choice,
how can you trust me with a child?"

To me, that is more an argument for forced sterilization.
(not the best slogan)

BTW.. I am pro-choice.... Educated choices.
I am also anti-abortion, but understand the sanctity of a woman's rights and the many issues surrounding this. I wish that abortions never happened....but I also wish for world peace etc... (why can't we all just be friends?) I am not that naive.

If only there weren't stupid people!

HAhahahahaa... another arguement for forced sterilzation!
HEY! HEY!!! get away with those snips!!!

So instead of pro-and-con abortion because that's gone on a bazillion times here, lets talk about how you Christian types are going to take your religion back!

I want to see blogging, I want to see billboards, I want to see letter-righting campaigns, I want to see a hundred anti-phelps movements, I want to see publicity stunts!

This here atheist will attend, support, applaud.

oh Michael Phelps is not so bad!

hmmm... well ok.... sigh...

I suppose I should. Gone on too long that the naughties have held the reigns.

Hear, hear! I would love to see the Christians who keep saying "Oh, those people over there aren't Christians!" actually do something about it. If all you've got is "Well, God will take care of it," then step aside, get out of the way, sit down, and shut up, because we've got a lot of more immediate solutions in mind.

ok. YOU
Sit down and shut up, please.

God WILL take care of it..and as part of that, I am charged with being a good steward.

Please do not judge Christianity by the actions of a few misguided loud mouths.
Perhaps this will take a new "label" as the current one has been besmerched.
hmmm???

I figure that this will not be something that can be corrected in a few weeks, months or even years. I also believe that is not the point, to work MY agenda (or yours) within MY timeline.

Just as I believe in creation.. I also believe in evolution as PART of God's creation. Not at all at odds. I see God's "days" as potentially much longer than ours.... he has eternity to work. (besides... in Genesis...God was establishing "days" as we now know them).

I am NOT a priest or pastor as such...
I am a fallible Christian.
I HOPE to set a "better example"... but rest assured that I fuck up.

Ok..stand back up...
I am curious, as to what your "immediate solutions" are? And even what you perceive the "problem" to be?

I'd like to know what I am up against on ALL sides.

God, Stella, I never thought I'd see you calling for the Nazification of anything. Taking something back and making everyone march in lock step.

If you are in favor of choice, why can't you let there be choice in religion as well? There are bunches and bunches of Christian denominations.

I feel no need for taking anything back from the fundamentalists--they don't have anything I want.

Talk about dogmatic. Nothing quite as like a Christian fundamentalist as a zealot athiest.

As far as the topic of the threads, we have several posters around here who frequently call for just killing anyone who doesn't agree them. Wonder why they are commenting on this thread. Severimax, where are you, good buddy?

Um, Throbbs, you are whining.

Don't whine.

Telling anyone to sit down and shut up will get you the royal raspberry.

Don't tell us that your god will take care of it. he won't do anything in a timeframe that will be useful to the rest of us.

He famously helps those who help themselves, so get moving.

I don't care what you believe-- about abortion, or evolution or anything else. Those are your own beliefs.

I want you Christians to take these hate-filled Christians out of Christianity.

It's your collective job, not mine, and if I don't see some action I will have my own conclusions, that these guys really are part of the Christian faith. They say they are, after all.

As will painting all Christians with one brush (shades of the Amicus Right-Liberal schtick) and then directing them to play NAZI.

Pot/ketttle.

I think you misunderstand.

Part of the issue (world issue) , such as I perceive it, is that the "label" of Christianity has been misappropriated. I believ thta causes a GREAT deal of confusion. So maybe... the concept of "taking Christianity back" is not quite the path. hmmmm...

again, this may require some marketing.... a NEW name. And let those guys have it.

Ah, but I am not the one saying "They aren't real Christians!" Christians are saying that.

But so far, saying it is all they've done, and we've just lost one more doctor. Shot in his church, at that. I think it's time the churches stop waiting for God to handle this.

Hey, it is what I do best! (whine)

BUT. if someone is gonna challenge ME. with "Sit down and shut up" After telling me to do something.. perhaps they SHOULD sit down for a bit and listen.

HOWEVER, I do need to gather myself to the challenge. And IF John-the Author has some immediate solutions, I think I should listen.

Yeah, I admit I didn't see that "sit down" in his post, I apologise.

And I think he's completely wrong--

I'm encouraging you to stand up and shout!

We had this same "conversation" when "athiest" was substituted for "Christian" and you sang a completely different tune.

As I said, in terms of dogmatism and narrow-mindedness, there isn't a zot of difference between a Christian fundamentalist and a zealot athiest.

Now >>> I <<<< am not saying that "they are not real Christians"....

I SAID :"No matter what they may believe, they are not followers of Christ."

This may be a matter of semantics.... but In Christ's day... there were no "Christians" per se.

So.... MAYBE as Srplt might be implying.. perhaps these folk ("fundies"?) are indeed "christians"... my contention, is what they present to the world is NOT what Christ presented.

I also believe that there are MANY.. (not enough yet) churches that are taking action... it is a HUGE undertaking. There are prejudices that are DEEPLY ingrained here and HUGE amounts of cash leverage. [not WHINING..just stating]

True.

However, I'd say that Stella has "opened the door"... and THAT is NOT narrow minded nor dogmatic.:p

Whoa. I didn't imply any such thing. I was commenting on Stella's Amicus-like (put everyone in one bucket) nastiness on this point.

So?

*shrug*

I really don't give a fuck about your opinion on this. Don't waste your typing fingers on me.

Making all of the other Christian denominations responsible for what Christian fundamentalists do and say and for tracking them down and make them go in some sort of lockstep is "opening doors"

Get a clue.

Ok. sorry. I should have said that I was INFERRING or extrapolating from what you had said. (really didn't mean to put words into your mouthe there. sorry.

...

There ARE "bunches of Christian denominations"... I think in many people's minds (including quite a few Chrsitians) it becomes "fuzzy".... so they all get "mixed up in a bucket". SO..... maybe this shoudl not be a fight to "take back" Christianity, but to seek out the roots of what Christ /God intended...if we are able to discern that. (not sure we CAN, but I do think we can get a whole lot closer than shooting a Dr. in the name of God, and Denying marriage to loving couples in the name of God....)
