I'm putting together a trip to head out to a firearms range for a little target practice. I'll be bringing my firearms, as will one other person. And of course, as long as the range provides rentals, you can rent them.

Day: Looking like it will be Saturday, March 21st

Location: Kenosha

Group size: Will be limited pending the number of trained shooters on hand. Currently limited to 10 people total, 5 people have already confirmed, 4 of which are military trained. If you are interested and are military, police, or NRA trained, let me know so that we can increase the group size.

Ammo: We will be picking up ammunition in WI. As a guideline: 50 rounds of 9mm typically runs $10-15, $50 rounds of .45ACP typically runs $16-25.

Experience level: Beginners are welcome, I have at least one handgun with almost no recoil felt. You will be paired up with an experienced shooter.

Safety: I am a self-titled Safety Nazi, courtesy of my training as a kid by Dad. Prior to going, I will gather everyone together in my room, and go over operation of the firearms I am bringing, as well as basic safety rules. On the range, all safety regulations of mine and of the range will be followed. Be forewarned, if you violate these rules I am not afraid to tackle you, disarm you, or remove you from the range depending on the severity. Shooting is a helluva lot of fun, but guns are NOT toys. I also recommend bringing a pair of "foamies", the hearing protection you roll up and place inside your ear. Ranges typically will provide ear muffs and safety glasses if you don't have them, however do to the power of several of the weapons going, I suggest foamies be brought as well.

IL residents: Apparently your state requires you to be in possession of r a FOID card [firearms id card] in order for you to shoot. If you do not have one already, sadly you will be unable to go as it takes months to get one. Edited: Since we are going to a range in WI this no longer applies

If you're interested in going, please PM me to let me know, as well as let me know your experience level.

How very cool!

This looks like a lot of fun - I asked Jag to post about it because I really don't have a clue about the specifics.

Happiness is a Warm Gun . . .

Location: Range to be decided, currently being researched. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Would like it to be capable of handling rifle/handgun. Keep in mind the range will charge a fee for use of their range, range fees vary depending upon the range. As a backup plan, to take weather into consideration, there is a public indoor pistol range in Des Plaines.

Ammo: Only residents of IL, MO, WI, and KY can purchase ammunition in IL. To get around this, we are going to pool money together and have a couple of local people purchase it. As a guideline: 50 rounds of 9mm typically runs $10-15, $50 rounds of .45ACP typically runs $16-25.

Well if it ends up being that there is a lot more local interest in going...we may look into going to an indoor pistol range in WI, where you can go.

I think I've found a range that may off us the best compromise.

The pluses: being in Indiana, everyone can shoot [big plus], its indoors, decently priced [$10/hr if we bring our own ammo, $7/hr if we buy from them], gun rentals [$10/hr].

The negatives: its a bit of a drive [approx 40mi] and allows firearms that only shoot handgun ammo [aka neither of the rifles allowed].

If there is sufficient interest, let me know and I'll research that range further.

Kenosha is just on the other side of the state line. It's not any farther (and in a lot of cases closer) than anywhere else we'd have to go if we want rifle/handgun and a decent variety of distances to shoot.

It looks like a good option. Heres the link if anyone wants to provide feedback: Kenosha Ranges And yes we can get ahold of a members card

My FOID is expired. I only shoot long guns.

Other than that, it sounds interesting.

Kenosha is in WI, therefore no need for a FOID. It also has a rifle range, there will be at least two rifles there. It also has heated, covered areas to shoot :D

You're doing your best to kill off my excuses, ain'tcha? Do I still get to wear your hunting jacket?

Damn, I'll be missing all the good stuff...

Sweet...

Sarahh and Witch

and shooting...my favorite sport. Well, number two really.

Seeing Sarahh and Witch is always number one.:rose:

And I'm military trained. Handgun, rifle, bazooka (75mm recoilless rifle), mortar (81mm), MA2 Quad and the Pig (M-60).

Okay, there's a bit of a problem with Kenosha. Only the people who hold member cards (which, as far as I know would only be Gizz) get to shoot at the member rate of $5. The rest of us would each have to pay $30.

As far as ranges in Illinois go, whether or not you non-Illinois residents would need a FOID card to shoot depends on the range. The law says that non-residents don't need FOIDs, but there are a lot of ranges that will require one anyway. There's a halfway decent range down in Aurora, but I don't yet know what their requirements about the FOID cards are.

So...what does everyone think? $30 per person to shoot up in Kenosha, go with the one in Indiana, or find a different one altogether?

ETA: I do think we should stick to looking for ranges in either Wisconsin or Indiana simply because more people who want to could go. I don't want the trip excluding people, particularly experienced shooters who are local, because they don't have a FOID card.

Personally I'm still thinking Kenosha...thats $30 for the whole day. Most others seem to charge about $10/hr. On top of that, they are the only place that offers rifle/pistol ranges, a heated waiting area, and heated/covered shooting enclosures.

I sure wouldn't want to spend a whole day at the range. I can do that at home for a lot less than $30. An hour or so is one thing but . . .

Well I'm just taking into account the amount of people, limited firearms, etc...figuring it would be a couple hours.
