The Shebabe - former captain of 3 (count'em) "three" HS Cheerleading and Pom squads.......

Claims to me (and all other's who give a crap) that Cheerleading is a sport - coordination, stamina, even hand-eye shit in there too.......

I of course scoff - a sport - right.

I told her I'd post this subject to get a reaction from you all.

You know how I feel about it - what's your take?

jury says...

NOT - of course I do enjoy watching to see who REALLY wears panties or not...
But how can you blame me!!!

how can one go wrong?

sitting back drinking a beer or two - or maybe a fine wine looking up skirts a-twirling - nothing finer!!

Therefore, I move we make it an honorary sport, or at least call them athletes. I mean, we (I) call the gymnast contortioners in my X rated videos athletes, so why not???
Plus, you better not piss off the Shebabe, would be my personal advice on this one..... just go ahead and call it a sport.
"A rose by any other name....etc..."

not quite convinced

that it should be a sport - i think the true sport is chasing them after the game they are there to cheerlead for - backseat wrassling could be the sport..

OK, I'll concede to you, sounds good to me. Consider it a warmup exercise for the real sport... heh, heh, heh...

DEFINATELY a sport! :p

Ever had to practice at 4:30 in the morning, go to school, practice from 3-6:30, do it again the next morning.

And I'd love to see you guys pull off a toe-touch or basket toss.

*sits back and grabs some popcorn* Go ahead... I'll wait while you stretch.

:D

I played a lot of Miss Pac-man in High School. It required hand eye coordination, stamina, and a lot of quarters. I think that's a sport too.:D

It's not a sport? Really? Lets see you practice the shit 6 hours a day for seven years and not call it a sport. It is a sport and it is very competetive.

Can you do backflips? Can you throw another person up into the air and catch them?

Not only do you have to be extremely coordinated, but you have to have at the least some sort of gymnastic background, nearly perfect balance and a fair amount of upper body strength to pull off most of those moves that look incredibly easy.

You have to be in VERY good shape to be a successful cheerleader. And believe me you'll remain that way the whole time you're involved. I bet that during the time that I was a cheerleader I had more stamina, speed, balance, coordination and endurance than you did at my age. ;)

I suppose

Any type of exercise that breaks a sweat is a sport. I MEAN, WALKING is considered a sport, for crying out loud.

I did play six hours a day. I also took Gymnastics so the other questions aren't fair. ;) NASCAR drivers say that's a sport too, but they're sitting. :)

It's a sport! Some of you guys just don't think so because we make it look so easy, which takes talent :p I don't cheer anymore but I did all throughout high school, and it's definitely a workout.

They're not fair? Do you not consider gymnastics a sport? I do. Why isn't Nascar racing a sport?

sure cheerleading is a sport

It's not the athletic skill of cheerleaders that amazes me, but rather, their "over-the-top" cheerfullness.

A year of so ago, I was in Orlando for business. There was some kind of national high school cheerleading competition going on while I was there. My hotel was full of cheerleaders, and the eye candy wasn't too bad.

I am a night person and a real grump in the mornings when I don't get enough sleep. That week, I had to get up at 5 am every day and leave the hotel by 6 am. About the fourth morning, I walked out of my room at 6 am and got into the elevator to go down to the lobby. On the next floor, the elevator stopped and four cheerleaders got into the elevator. They were all jumping around and laughing, when one of the little bitches turned to me, and with a grin that touched both ears, said, "Good morning sir, and how are you this morning"? I grumbled, "fine, and you"?

But what I really wanted to do was slap the little bitch and tell her to go get me some coffee. I think that is the "oldest" I have ever felt in my life.....:( ;)

Gymnastics is definately a sport, too. Otherwise the Olympic Committee would say no go. *grins*

WHOOO HOOO FOR CHEERLEADERS!!!!!

Anyone ever watched a competition on ESPN? Watch what they do, how fast they do it, their clean moves, the sweat that pours off them at the end, the smiles on their faces even if they mess up, the way the crowd cheers for them, the effort on their face as their performing... and then tell me they don't work hard and are not a sport.

Let's just pretend that it isn't so everyone can continue to class cheerleaders as ditzy airheads who bop up and down and clap mindlessly.

Nevermind all the awards, trophies, ribbons, or the Sports Authority cash prizes I've won.

A Sports Journalist wades in

Okay, sports by definition are competitions by which a specific goal is measured and acheived. Scoring a goal in hockey, baskets in basketball, touchdowns, runs...winning a race, such as auto racing or track and field, or accomplishing something of notable and measurable worth more than or before your opponent.

Judged events are not sports. Any athletic endeavor where human judging is the sole determining outcome leaves too much to human bias. Figure Skating, cheerleading, these are not sports.

So's Ballroom Dancing. Yet, Football, Aussie rules Football and Golf aren't.

Don't judge sports by whether or not they're in the Olympics, a corrupt organization if there ever was one.

Alright, then if it's not a "sport" by definition, then it is most definitely a serious athletically challenging activity.

OK, Angel can we compromise with this definition? :) It works for me (where's that trendy phrase thread?).:D

Not something I am disputing. I just don't think it needs to be on ESPN. Throw the damn dog shows out, too...oh, and the world's strongest man competitions.
