Chat won't work

When I log on to chat and locate a username I would like to contact, I click on the little arrow on the right of name. If I click on view profile, the person's profile pops up. No problem, but when I click on send message, no window opens up. The username appears in three places near the top of the screen. I've tried clicking on each one, still nothing. Software won't let me type anywhere. I've tried this on both Firefox and the Microsoft platform (Bing?), with the same results. Is the problem because I'm using a desk top? Do I need a cell phone for this? Or is there some magic step that is missing from the instructions?

usually the cell phone is what has the issues.
typically a room - the user will appear in the list on the right side. If you double click that person, it should create a new window at the top of the chat page - typically you would have Lobby... then any additional rooms or private chats you have created.

Actually, I discovered the solution by accident. On a desk top it has nothing to do with the names at the top of the screen. Nothing you can click on at the top of the screen, or the side bars, will give you the window to write in. The window to write in is way down on the bottom of the page--exactly where you would never expect it to be.
