Chat issues

Chat is essentially unusable for me at the moment. I can log in for 10 minutes or so, but often previously lively chat rooms will go dead the moment I show up - as if I'm not getting anyones messages. Or there will seem to be a couple of people chatting, but when I try to say anything myself, the room just freezes and dies. This happens both in big rooms and in one-to-one chat (along with the smaller rooms I generally frequent).

Most concerningly, my wifi which never usually drops, drops/freezes fairly frequently whilst in chat. As in, the chat kills the whole dang internet and I have to reboot. The overall experience is a little worrying. Please advise.
