Charlotte Church wins "Rear of the Year" award

By Paul Majendie

LONDON (Reuters) - Teen-age singing sensation Charlotte Church has performed for princes, presidents and popes. On Wednesday, she won Britain's Rear of the Year award.

"It is very strange," said the bemused 16-year-old as paparazzi, usually more obsessed with the pert posterior of Australian pop diva Kylie Minogue, battled for the best shot of the Welsh soprano's curves.

The award offered the perfect transition for the "Voice of An Angel." Gone is the cherub-faced child star who has sold 10 million albums around the world. In comes the glamorous teen-ager acutely aware that image is a vital marketing tool.

"I think it is quite sad that image is so absolutely fundamental," she told Reuters as she strode into a sun-kissed London park, admitting she felt faintly foolish wearing her "Rear of the Year" winner's sash for the obligatory photo-shoot.

"But that's the way of the world, that is the way it is, nobody is going to change it. Therefore there is no point in complaining about it -- just embrace it."

But she firmly rejected the wet T-shirt look that classical violinist Vanessa-Mae adopted for her best-selling album cover.

"Definitely not. There is no need," Church said of the look that provoked a backlash from critics who accused classical music marketers of "dumbing down" the art in pursuit of profits.

"I wouldn't say I have gone on a sexy angle," she said as photographers begged her to swivel around in her faded blue jeans and show just why she won her accolade.

Flattered and honored by the award, she had never thought her behind was her best asset.

"I said this is a laugh. Please -- me? Rear of the year? I don't think so," she said. "When I was 15, it wouldn't have been allowed to give me 'Rear of the Year' as it would probably have been considered too crude. Now I am 16, it's allowed."

A big occasion -- From the Hollywood Bowl to the Winter Olympics (news - web sites) and Britain's Millennium Dome -- certainly does not faze Church.

She is a fiercely committed professional whose personal worth has been put as high as $10 million.

And she boasts an impressive list of the great and good who have heard the golden voice of the girl from the Welsh valleys, first discovered on a British television talent show at the age of 11 and speedily signed by Sony a year later.

Asked who topped the charisma stakes, she said: "I'd say Bill Clinton and also Tony Blair (news - web sites) -- very, very charismatic and warm."

But George W. Bush's geography knowledge -- not for the first time -- let him down badly: "He asked me what state Wales was in. I didn't really know how to answer that one, bless him."

Seems like everyone else loves her @ss.

I hate all this commercialism and sex appeal needed to sell albums. But when it's opera and classical music, I guess one can't expect anything else.:(

she's got a great voice but that's a pretty average ass...reminds me of a joke....that's a pretty good divide sakajaweia but not a great divide...may the ancestors forgive my spelling..

Ain't no booty...

PaganAngel

I am grossed out by it too. I love Charlotte Church and saying she has the "best ass" is degrading to her. Also, she is a kid.

it's the kid thing that gets me. people are just disgusting.

She's shaped well, and it's not that she's too young; she's no younger than Britney Spears was when she got all that attention...
But, isn't there something on the books about singers having to like...y'know, sing to get famous? I mean, I've never heard of her until now...

QC, if you appreciate incredible vocal talent, she's worth listening to. She doesnt sing pop like Britney though, she's more a classical vocalist, and does opera most often. Probably why you've missed hearing of her.

Charlotte Church

Charlotte Church made her first album when she was nine. made her second "Voice of an Angel" at age 12 and went platinum. She sang for Kings, Queens, Presidents, even the Sultan of Brunei. She has made several TV specials where she has mentioned she does not want to be "provacative" because "there is too much of that going on right now."

She speaks four languages and sings in six. She sings classical, opera, vocal feature and Celtic music. She is Welsh and often sings in Welsh dialects, Irish Gaelic and Scottish Gaelic.

She is also the wealthiest female in Britain. Not that she was born into money, she earned it.

Latest development:

Welsh deputy education minister Alun Pugh has called for an investigation of the "Rear of the Year" award to determine if Charlotte Church's title amounts to "sexual exploitation".

It will heretofore be known as the Church/Pugh debate.

Anyone else see the sick website with a counter in days/hours/minutes - counting down until Charlotte Church was gonna be legal (ie her 16th birthday) ?

She has a fucking gorgeous voice, I heard it the other day

And she looks fucking stunning too, but theres not much to be done either way about that.

It's okay *shrug*, I've seen much better. Her face is nice - she is a pretty young girl and all, but should the media and commercial interests be pushing this kind of sensationalism of a 16 year old? I know teenagers are sexual beings too, but doesn't this put a lot of stress and pressure on teenager girls when we do this? :( They have a hard enough time coming to grips with their bodies and their sexuality. Even worse are the people who parade their pre-pubescent kids in the beauty pagents - to me, that is just sick! Such people seem almost like borderline pedophiles.

Not picking on STG here,.....

.....just a comment on the general direction of the thread. She has been put under far more pressure than commercialism or "sexuality" could EVER put her simply by being graced with a voice that is recognized by her and most of society as one that comes along only once every few centuries. To say she is a gift is an understatment! To recognize her as an attractive young WOMAN as well, is most likely a welcome diversion for her! Yes, I said woman. The experiences she has had in her sixteen years make most of our lives seem empty and tame. There are many in the world who seem to be given an incredible talent as well as incredible maturity to deal with it. I don't think she is in any way a "child".

Please, she's not even close to being the wealthiest female in Britain. Not even in the top 100.

In many ways she has probably had many adult experiences, but in many ways I would guess she is still child at 16 - regardless of her experience, there is usually still some physical and mental maturation she would undergo before I would call her an adult.

But that is not/was not my point; I was thinking of the pressure this puts on other children her age and younger. I would guess that she can handle what she is going through, and either way she has probably chosen her own path - but I was thinking more of the wider cultural and societal influences on other children. I do believe that many of the problems we see in teenagers (eating disorders, body image, self-esteem, etc.) stem, in part, from these kinds of sensationalism, marketing or not.

You make good points STG, if we were looking at an average 16 yearold who had some talent that people were trying to develop. We are looking at the vocal talent eqivalent to an Einstein in a young woman. She has been recording for seven years and had a "hit" four years ago. Most one hit wonder bands don't handle success at 30 as she has. I just think we need to see her as "one in ten billion" as it appears that is just how rare her talent is.
