So I have just received a rather lengthy email responce to one of my stories. The reader was complimentary, and went into quite a bit of detail on suggestions for a follow up chapter.

I am, first off, thankful that someone became so invested in my characters that they felt compelled to reach out to me. I have no plans to write another chapter to that story. I left it where I wanted it to be.

That being said, I kind of want to tell them that they are free to create a second chapter if they so choose.

Which got me to wondering, has anyone ever had another author use/borrow/steal characters and use them in a new story, either with or without permission?

I have on a couple of occasions stated a CC license in case anyone wanted to.

I have never had my characters used without permission.

I did use another author's character WITH permission ina cameo role in a story.

There is a series by another author where each story is a stand-alone, and I liked the concept so I asked and got permission to write stories using the premise.

I've done two collaborative stories where each of us used existing characters and put them together into a different story. With one of those writers, he then wrote another story with one of my characters, and I wrote a story with one of his. It's an interesting exercise, as a writer.

I asked ChloeTzang if I could use one of her characters in a story, just in a supporting role. It's the polite thing to do.

I'm writing what's now three stories based on two characters created by Sweetdreamssss. It's a collaborative effort. The hardest part is trying to make sure I stay true to the original characters, particularly as they are Indian - there's a lot of emails going back and forth about the difference in cultures.

If someone asked to use mine, I'd be flattered but i'd want to be sure they stayed within my ideas for that character.
