I say ma’am not it in an age context, in a politeness context. In the south, when we call you ma’am, it’s respect.
Out here everybody just says “yo” or “dude”

Well, I did giggle at ma'am once. A litster from Georgia said "thank you Ma'am" at the end of a skype call. That made me laugh, I guess for the same reasons.I actually love that. There was a guy from US (Houston) and we worked together for some time. At the beginning he would always call me "ma'am", and I would giggle.
