I've been writing on the site a long time, with a few breaks along the way.

It seems like there's an ebb and flow of new quality writers.

For some reason, we lost a lot of the ground breakers, around 2005-2006. I stopped writing in 2006 for a year and a half. I remember TheSandMan quit around 2005, for many of the same reasons as I recall, later coming back as Many Feathers. Lost MaxSebastian in 2005, for about 5 years. rgjohn's output dropped to almost nothing in 2005. klrxo disappeared from 2004 until the end of 2007. GeorgeTasker gone from 04-09. Stormbringer, nothing 04-08. English Bob, VertigoJ, last stories in 2005. Scribler '06. Don't know all the reasons, but you could see the changes.

A lot of the top early writers seemed to disappear around then. Fortunately 2005-2006 was a great period for new writers, lots of them showing up around that time. Names like thecelt, bluedragonauthor, goldeniangel, BarondeSade, DG Hear, TxRad, BlewWater69, ohio, sr71plt, Pelaam, Longhorn_07, Darkniciad, the list goes on and on.

I considered it the changing of the guard.

It seems like another influx of really good writers started around 2010, showing up out of nowhere, and dominating top lists, contests etc. I was just wondering if any of the other old-timers have noticed this, or if it's just my paranoiac imagination?

Is there another changing of the guard, and I just missed it?

I am too much of a noob to answer your question but I did want to say....

I am really glad most of these artists if not all (as i did not recognize some names) left their work intact on this site when they left. One of my favorite authors from my early readings on this site disappeared and took their work with them when they became a properly published author. Her name was Ahmoon and her writing was wonderful, I am still saddened that she removed her stories from the site.

As for changing of the guard perhaps not it maybe that they just moved over to create a bit more room for the great amateurs. I messed up my first account on this site and was no longer able to access it but i was lucky enough that Laurel transferred some of my stories over for me to this new account. Perhaps they are not all gone perhaps they are just ditzy like me.

Just read a Raymond Chandler essay about writers.

He said mastery is what kills production. The better you become the less you create, and the less you have to say.

That's like in Darts.

A new player will try to hit a 20 and end up missing but grab a triple 18. We call that a "splash"

But when a player gets much better that missed twenty is either a 5 or a 1 and right on the wire.

So at that point being more skilled almost hurts you.

But the good thing is when it gets down to the wire, the rookie cannot hit that one remaining specific number, but the pro can. So end of the day being experienced should usually still help you out in the end.

I'd kick my rookie status if I had less drama in real life :)

Being relatively new myself, I can recall a lot of the good writers that were here when I arrived and are now gone including TawnyT, Colleen Thomas (RIP), Rogue Lurker, Evil Alpaca, Abs and Vana separately and as Fusion, Alex the Cat, Alex de Coq and Black Shanglan.

I suppose it's the way of things. "The old order changeth, yielding place to new." :D

Life changes and people have to change with it. I remember those and a bunch more. I miss most of them, they were friends.

I joined in mid-2005. I remember lots of posters who rarely stop by anymore. I'm often tempted to drift away myself.

Do any of the 'vets' know what happened with, ronde.

Or maybe, Mused.

Their work, plus that of a few that are still on here, are what prompted me to try posting.

If there is a changing of the guard happening, as you put it, I find it a mixed event. The works of some very good writers have vanished as they took down their stories and left. A two year hunt for a story I read has led me to think that maybe what happened to it.

But if it is lost... new stories by new writers are appearing everyday so perhaps I will find something as good as the one I can't find and if I don't... well then I'll have to write it myself.

Well, if the guard is changing I'll grab up my pen and do my very best to guard these hallowed halls of erotica but I have one question.:D:

Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?

Had to guess on that one. Only had one year of Latin, and the teacher died halfway through the year. The sub was a gym teacher and the only thing he taught us was "Semper ubi sub ubi." :D

There is a movie that could have helped you with that latin quote, (your other thread about movies and books) The Watchmen.

Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?

"Who guards the guards" has also been translated into "Who watches the watchmen".

Alan Moore, at his finest.

Watchmen set the comic industry on its ear back when it came out.

the movie was dead on, but alas, twenty years to late, the story was tame by today's standards, but back then it was shocking.

To this day Rorshach is one of my favorites from any work of fiction and the Comedian as well. Classic anti heroes.

Looking at comics today, I just shake my head. Short of Kirkman there is no one qualified to make Moore a cup of coffee, especially super fraud Bendis.

After we finished watching Psycho, hubby told me to look for another one to watch later. NO THANK YOU! Too much work. :D

I miss the horse, and a certain Scottish donkey. Not to mention the goose. A certain NY sandhog, comes to mind. Vella my love and Colleen the mighty, whose logic was impeccable. There are many more believe me.
