CENTCOM briefing, Canada, statues, and other war stuff

I was just wondering if anyone else watched the CENTCOM briefing today and noted the question directed to Gen. Brooks from the Canadian reporter. (I can't remember exactly which Canadian news org. he was from- sorry).

He was asking Gen. Brooks about a Canadian military unit or division (?) in an operation outside "Iraqi Freedom" that has access to/knowledge of the location of fled Iraqi war criminals and Al-Quaeda operatives, but was withholding this information and these criminals from the U.S., due to Canada's stated passive stance on "Iraqi Freedom." He wanted Gen. Brooks's reaction to this.

Brooks simply stated that whatever the situation with Canadian forces elsewhere in the world, they were operating outside the parameters of "Iraqi Freedom" and therefore not relevant. Only he said it better than I just paraphrased it.

Does anyone know anything further about this, or remember exactly what was said during the briefing?

Also, was anyone watching when the Saddam statue toppled? At first, Iraqis tried to bring it down with a rope and by taking turns with a sledgehammer. After nearly an hour and not much of a dent made, an American tank rolled up to help. Actually, it wasn't a tank, but a support vehicle of some sort, and it had a crane-like attachment which they tied the rope to. At one point, when they were tying it on, a Marine covered the face of the statue with a U.S. flag, but it was taken off after a few moments and replaced with a pre-Saddam Iraqi flag around the statue's neck.

I thought that was good. I can understand how, in the jubilation, the Marine got caught up in the excitement and grabbed the American flag to put up there. But it really was the Iraqis who were having their moment. It was palpable even through a TV set. And, sorry for the personal aside, but knowing my brother was somewhere in the melee... trying to catch a glimpse of him...

I wish I'd been there. Odd, but true.

Reports have been coming through left and right about COs telling their men to take down American flags from tanks, not to hoist them onto Iraqi monuments and buildings, etc., since we're not occupiers, but liberators.

Coalition forces, overall, have been demonstrating a great deal of grace under fire, sensible judgment and have been setting a good example. They're doin' us proud.

And... I really don't know what else to say. It's mostly emotion right now...

Babbling in Baghdad,
Ellie

I'm still coming down from my reality break. I don't really want to know, and am just going to wish everyone a good day.

Thanks for your perspective, ET. My television is staying off today.

I think the question was just an attempt to bring the canadian position on the war into the spotlight. The stance they took on harboring iraqis from the US received such little notice in the world press or from the pentagon (I have only seen one quick blurb about 3 days ago and yesterday on Reuters, and nothing on al-jizz) that I guess that they had to use that opportunity to try to get some idea of what the US response to their position is.

The situation they are talking about is pretty much just theoretical, they only have a few in their possession, and seeing they are neutral in the war it would probally be good of them to just take em back to canada and give them a Molsen and exile. The type of people they want to protect would be better off stuck in canada and not in iraq while we install our new govt there... they can keep the troublemakers I say.

Hope your brother stays safe!

Funny... I thought this was a war to help Iraq and clear out the old regime, not for the US to install their own hand picked government.

Well I support the war, but I don't belive any politician American or otherwise when they say the new govt will be 'by the iraqi people. The first transitional govt will have to be installed by someone, and I think it should be the US and not the UN, and dammm if my tax $$$ are funding it I would really like to think that we will at least play s significant role in choosing/installing a new govt, not just leave it up in the air or let other nations install theirs, so we don't end up back there again in a couple of years.

And when exactly does the US say "Ok Iraq, you can now go out on your own..."? Will they ever?

The UN needs to play a major part in creating a new government in Iraq. Yes the US should get a decent say in the matter, but all along the US line has been "We want Saddam out" .. It looks like now he is out.

Do a little clean up, help get that nation back on it's feet then get out of there.

I agree and hope it would go that easily, but I think it's gonna turn into a political quagmire once the (major) shooting is over. The fanatics from all over the mideast will have a new 'suicide bombing' target and they will never be satisfied with any govt there regardless who is administering it because ultimitaley we invaded and in their eyes it will always be our puppet govt.

Do a little clean up, help get that nation back on it's feet then get out of there.

And maybe take along a little oil on the way out, hell why should I pay $1.50/gal when we have 300k troops there I say
