CBP says it's 'unrealistic' for Americans to avoid its license plate surveillance

U.S. Customs and Border Protection has admitted that there is no practical way for Americans to avoid having their movements tracked by its license plate readers, according to its latest privacy assessment.

Police license plate readers are still exposed on the internet

mile! You’re on camera. At least, your license plate is.

You might have heard of automatic license plate recognition — known as ALPR (or ANPR in the U.K. for number plates). These cameras are dotted across the U.S., and are controlled mostly by police departments and government agencies to track license plates — and people — from place to place.

If they're tracking my plates, they're in for an interesting nite.

In the UK it is impossible to drive into any sizeable town or city, or to use a motorway, without being registered on multiple ANPR cameras.

Despite that there are more than one million uninsured cars on the UK's roads and most of them have not paid their road tax, or have a current roadworthiness (MOT) certificate.

The chances of being stopped by the UK's police are still low. The consequences if you are?

A fine, three points on your driving licence - if you have one - and your car is seized there and then. You have to walk.

You might be able to reclaim your car if you take out insurance NOW and pay any outstanding road tax, but you would still have to pay about £200 on top of the fine to reclaim your car.

The people who don't pay insurance or road tax are freeloaders exploiting the system. Every insured driver has to pay an increased premum because of them, and even so, might not be able to claim for repairs to your car if you were hit by an uninsured driver.

A modern ANPR camera checks for insurance, road tax, MOT status and gives the vehicle owner's registered address.
