My University of Kansas Jayhawks have just beaten the Kansas State University Wildcats.

It was a great game and also an exciting day with family and friends.

AND we've earned terrific bragging rights for the next year or so. (Yea us!)

No news in particular. I was just wondering, what are Jayhawks, besides being members of the U of K sports teams?

Jayhawk history questions!

4) Is a “Jayhawk” a real bird?

Not exactly. The origin of the name is believed to come from the mid-1800’s when a group of pioneers crossed what is today known as Nebraska and referred to themselves as “The Jayhawkers of ‘49”. The group gave itself the nickname from the combination of the blue jay and the hawk, which are two birds indigenous to the western part of the country. The name was first used in Kansas during the late 1850’s and was associated with lawless acts such as robbing and looting. When the Civil War began, however, the name “Jayhawk” took on a more positive meaning and was used in conjunction with the courageous men who fought to keep Kansas from becoming a slave state, and, eventually, Kansans proudly referred to themselves as “Jayhawkers”. In 1866, the university of Kansas adopted the mythical bird, and, by 1912, a cartoon Jayhawk was created by a student whose name was Henry Malloy. The Jayhawk has changed its appearance six times since then, but the present day drawing hasn’t been altered since 1946.

5) What’s up with that eerie “Rock Chalk” chant?

It was started by E.H.S. Bailey, a KU chemistry professor who wanted a cheer for his science club. Upon a train trip home from Wichita during the mid 1880’s, Bailey and some of his associates came up with a chant entitled “Rah, Rah, Jay Hawk, KU”, and patterned the rhythm from the cadence of their train as it rolled along the tracks. Bailey submitted the cheer to his club on May 21, 1886 and the words “Rock Chalk” later replaced “Rah, Rah” because it not only rhymed with Jayhawk, but also was symbolic of the chalky limestone (chalk rock) found on campus. The student newspaper officially adopted the chant on November 4, 1887 and it can now be heard from Kansas fans throughout the land.

Thanks for asking, Box! Thus ends our lesson for today! :)

Sweetsubsarahh,

Now I know why one of my neighbors went floating past my house this afternoon. :) The last eleven football seasons have been rough on him. Way, way back when, he played football and basketball at KU. One of his teammates was Dean Smith, who went on to become a legend while coaching North Carolina.

I'm grinning like a mule eating saw-briars over LSU coming from behind to whip Florida in Gainsville at "The Swamp."

But not quite as good as watching Beckham come back to form with a trademark free kick against Wales.

Robbo in goals, smeeves striking, what next? Woodgate partnering Rio?

Message to Sven (not 'flicka) next time ask any Leeds fan what your best team would be.

Gauche

Edited to add: You'd be surprised at how many current or ex-Man. U. players they'd pick.

But not quite as good as paticipating in my new rugby team's 22-0 resounding victory!

Sorry, just had to mention that again.

Obviously Sahahh cares and I was curious enough to ask.

I know how the Tarheels got that name but can you tell me how Wisconsin came to be known as "The Badger State"?

During the American Civil War, soldiers from North Carolina defended their positions so staunchly that their commander said that they stayed in place as if they were stuck there with tar on their heels.

it was a joke, box

Well, SDSU got beat on Saturday:mad: ...

but the Chargers beat Jacksonville:D ...

and the Dodger's lost:D ...

don't really care about St. Louis, but no Padre fan wants to see the Dodger's win anything!

Ummm... the Golden Gears are gonna have a perfect year again?

Well, our hideous mutant creatures have got a good chance at a perfect season in this year's Playing God championship...

Yeah, our school doesn't have a football team and I'd be lying if I said I was disappointed about that.

I'm more of a baseball and hockey person. Go Cardinals. The Dodgers don't deserve to advance.

Kansas Beating K-State

I am a husker fan myself...so this was a good thing for me (us)...I live in Kansas...and I know people that were acting like their mother had just died...I hate to say that I like misery, but this was misery that I thoroughly enjoyed. Especially since my Huskers were in the process of getting schlacked by Texas Tech....

ps. we got a little revenge on Baylor yesterday though....thank god. This just isn't a good football year in the Big 12:eek:

I wouldn't say that. Oklahoma, Texas, Oklahoma State, Texas A&M and Mizzou are all ranked in the top 25.
