Hi T.H.

Duck, I'd like to know where they are right now, and how bad. I heard you had a little rain, at least.

Hope you're in the clear.

Lioness

Firstly, sorry for the highjack TH.

Lioness.... took this directly from the Sydney Morning Herald... its pretty right too.

Fire chief's rain dance of joy

December 10 2002

The man who has been leading the NSW bushfire fight danced in the rain today after raging fires were dampened by overnight rainfall.

As he was leaving Rural Fire Service headquarters at Rosehill today, Commissioner Phil Koperberg kicked up his heels and described the rain as ``delightful''.

``We've had rain in fact over all of our fire areas, save the Great Lakes area,'' Mr Koperberg told reporters.

``But the (weather) bureau is confident that what we have here will move gradually northward.''

Last week, Mr Koperberg predicted that the fires would continue to burn until it rained, or there was nothing left to burn.

"It's raining, I'm pleased to say it's the former,'' he said today.

Victorian and South Australian firefighters would be stood down today but Mr Koperberg was reluctant to say the crisis had ended because summer had just begun.

``This particular episode of fires in and around Sydney and some of the other major population centres is certainly coming to an end,'' he said.

He later added: ``But I'm mindful of the fact that it's only day 10 of summer.''

More than 20mm of rain fell across the NSW south coast overnight, dampening the flames in the Shoalhaven and Eurobodalla areas.

Rural Fire Service spokesman John Winter warned that fires still brewed in large tree stumps which would continue to burn and could easily spark again when the temperatures heated up and the land dried out.

More than 57 fires continue to burn across the state but more than half are contained.

Around 1,000 firefighters will spend the day patrolling the fire lines, securing containment and mopping up after the devastating fires.

Rain is expected to continue to fall on the south coast throughout the day, but it is feared further north will receive no rain at all.

Mr Winter said the firefighters were very grateful for the rain but added that the moisture removed the preventative method of backburning.

"It will remove backburning as an option for us and backburning is still the most important way to control the fires," he said.

"The winds will be quite strong today, but the mixture in these conditions, with such a high level of moisture, (mean they should not prove a threat)."

For the first time since December 1, total fire bans will be lifted in NSW, Mr Winter said.

Additional.... looking out my office window, it has been raining solidly all day :D

Me too TH. I've been concerned about it.

Thank you, QD. I have an Aussie friend that went and fought them last year, who said it was unbelievable how hot and fierce they were.

Sort of like Aussie men in general, eh? ;)

I was worried that he'd have to repeat it this year, or that his house might be endangered.

Thank you again.
L.

no worries at all :)

because of the high winds this time around, they did not seem as bad... still not good, but not as bad since all the smoke was blown out to sea, rather than hanging around in the stillness like last year
