Just wondering - is there a description of each story category. For example, what makes a story a "Romance" or a "Mature" or a "Loving Wives"?

Forgive me if this seems a stupid question.

The descriptions on the categories aren't as helpful as maybe they could be. Tx Tall Tails published a How To some years ago that's a must-read for categorization. It's Love Your Readers: Categories

Some of the categories may have drifted a little since it was written. I need to re-read it myself.

It's not a stupid question.

A few years ago I had come across an article someone had written that not only gave a bit more detail about the focus of each category, but also gave some advice about which category to use if there were elements of multiple categories in your story. I've been looking for that article for the past week or so but haven't rediscovered it yet.

However, from the main stories and pictures site you should find a section on Resources for Writers (or something similar) and there are some articles in there that discuss category descriptions. Also, don't forget to check out the FAQ section.

Read the Tx Tall Tales article NotWise cited. That's the best word on the subject so far.

Unfortunately, if you post in illustrated it even more nebulous since your story can encompass any of the other categories. You can't tell what category the story fits in based on some of the titles. Sometimes the author might include a note at the beginning that warns you what you are getting, but often not.

There’s no such thing as a stupid question. If you want to know something, because you don’t know or understand, it doesn’t matter if the question has been asked a thousand times. You want, or need, to have that information and, in any case, why shouldn’t you ask?

Questions are regularly asked by new writers, or just people who like to read, and that’s great. Because they have an interest in what’s going on. But to be criticised for asking a question previously asked many times before, which I’ve seen on other threads, just isn’t on. When I started, and asked dumb questions, I was given considerable help by more experienced people which I greatly appreciated and still do.

To mention something slightly different. I may be wrong, in which case I know I’ll be corrected, but is it my imagination that recently there’s be an influx of new people, readers and writers, making comments? My memory isn’t good at the best of times but if that is the case I think it’s great.

It goes in waves. There's always someone coming on like gangbusters and then gone in a month.

Are you meaning story comments, or forum comments? There's definitely a bunch of new contributors to the AH, which is good.

Forum comments. There’s always the stalwarts but I think it’s nice to get something fresh in the basket.

I agree it seems like there's an influx of new contributors to the AH, asking all the same questions I wanted answered when I joined a few years ago. Plus ca change.

It's a good thing, even if the extreme level of repetition may make the old-timers' eyes roll.
