While most athlete roleplays show the character as very confident and smug, I decided to try and portray a college student on a baseball scholarship. Through the mix of being far from home and having just come out of a bad relationship, he's just trying to make it in a college world.

Virginia Tech. Just how the hell did I end up here? I had verbally committed myself to the University of Floriday, but at the last minute I decided to change my plans. However, the change was not without several reasons. All through highschool, I had excelled as both a single-sport athlete and a scholar. After trying out several positions with the school's baseball team, I found that I was most usefull behind the plate. I was tall for a baseball player, around 6'1, which suggested that I might be most productive at first base.
However, I chose to remain at catcher. By my junior year I had been named to the all conference team, not only because of my strong throwing arm but my high batting average. After receiving the same honors my senior year, I was sought after by many of the southern baseball powers. It wasn't every day that you found a catcher that not only could hit switch, but maintained a .300 average while doing so, and also had great academics. After a scare involving a collision with a runner, I had been warned against continuing my career. But being from a humble southern home, I had no other way to pay for college. Initially I had planned on attending the University of Florida, which was only a few hours drive form home. But with the chance to start as a freshman at VT, I used that as an excuse to run away from my last relationship.
I wasn't like most athletes. I was quiet, usually keeping to myself. After catching...pardon the pun...my girlfriend of two years with the starting point guard from our highschool, I knew I had to escape Florida, and college offered me that chance. Unlike most athletes, I pursued a strong major in Criminal Justice, with plans of attending law school. But between rising around 5 am to jog, then a weightlifting routine before a long day of classes, I didn't get out much. Some of my teammates would invite me to parties from time to time, but usually I just stood alone in the corner and watched everyone else having a good time.
Though Virginia is technically still in the south, the majority of my classmates and fellow athletes were from the northern part of the country, and not accustomed to my thick accent and habit of dipping. So, in honor of my difference, they nicknamed me "Country." Not the most original, I'll admit, but it provided me with a sense of belonging that I had lacked through all of my highschool years.
