Cat

STRAY CAT
by Francis Witham

Oh, what unhappy twist of fate
Has brought you homeless to my gate?
The gate where once another stood
To beg for shelter, warmth, and food
For from that day I ceased to be
The master of my destiny.

While he, with purr and velvet paw
Became within my house the law.
He scratched the furniture and shed
And claimed the middle of my bed.

He ruled in arrogance and pride
And broke my heart the day he died.
So if you really think, oh Cat,
I'd willingly relive all that
Because you come forlorn and thin
Well...don't just stand there...Come on in!

The Cat Poem/Joe Garnett

-I wish I was a catThe Cat Poem-

I wish I was a cat
And had all that-
A total fur coat,
Four paws and a tail-
And when I was hot
I could really wail-
But mostly just sleep
And eat, and lounge around.
I'd never use big words
Or complicated thoughts;
Never more than "Feed me,"
Or "What's that?"
'Cause I'm just a cat.
I'd keep my claws sharp,
And my dreams very sweet;
I'd be the toughest cat
On the street...for every bird
That became my treat,
I'd pin up a small flag
So I could keep track
Like those early war aces
That always flew back-
And when, on occasion,
I got a tummy ache,
I'd cough up a fur ball,
And scratch wherever
The fleas were at;
And say, I'm very glad
I'm a cat.

POEM TO MINDY

and there she is
my cat
she demands that my hands
touch her fur and
she demands my
total
attention
she knows she's the only cat
that matters
that ever mattered.
She knows the cats of Egypt
I sometimes think she was there herself and added that
unknown quality to
the reliefs in the temple walls, for
she is the only cat that ever mattered as she wimpers that
demanding little
raorw
