Casting Call

So, what about the Dune sagas? Anyone favor the theatre version over the SciFi channel movie? Who would you cast as Paul? Leto? Jessica? The Baron?

Though both had their merits, I prefer the theatrical actors to the Sci-Fi channel actors....

I'll admit to enjoying Sting as Feyd, but Kyle MacLachlan as Paul was an irritant to me. The Baron & Alia & Lady Jessica in the theater version were better, I think.

Something SubJoe said on another thread reminded me of this. I don't much anymore, but I used to cast the movie of every (fiction) book I read. I particularly remember very fixed ideas about who would be in "The Stand." Unfortunately, the movie was made many years later ... and by then all the actors I'd picked were too old for their roles. *sigh*

Anyway, does anyone else do this? Any particular book + cast you'd care to share? And what about one of your stories? How would you cast your favorite?

When writing - I always have people I know in mind because it helps me focus on looks, traits and idiosyncracies of characters. In school, writing student films, I always had certain actors in the theatre department in mind because it was necessary. In attempting screenplays, now? Well, if it is sex - no, but if it is something with a bend for drama and mainstream, then yes ... I usually do.

In reading? I read Glamorama last year, (yeah - it's been that long for non-sexual fiction - lol) and I had certain images of characters in my mind. I was sadly disappointed to watch the movie "Rules of Attraction" and see my envisioned characters come to life in an opposite way than what I imagined.

I do recall, however, being blown away by the castings of Roman Polanski's take on Thomas Hardy's book - movie title: Tess. Brilliant adaptation, even if it could not encompass everything the book did.

Yes. I agree. :D

I admit I haven't read through this whole thread before posting this (so if it's been said, I apologize), but when I'm reading, I cast famous people in parts as well as people I know. For instance, I started reading the Harry Potter books before I ever saw the movies, so I cast this woman that I can't stand (she's my arch nemesis, and ex-coworker) as Aunt Petunia. Both because Petunia's a bitch with red hair and because they describe Petunia as having a horsey-face, which this woman totally does.

Does anyone else cast people from RL as characters in books? Edited: Nevermind, having read, I see that yes they do. :) Well, anyway, I cast both famous and people I know.

From the first page of Glamorama, the image I had of Victor could almost flawlessly fit Keanu Reeves. That would be a perfect cast for the character. :D

His chest is not buff enough, but he has dim-witted down to a tee :D

Hmmm ... maybe 5. (Hell, I don't really know how old he IS. LOL)
Nah. He was 25 at the time, and the book character, even with the sex, would have fitted better a 15- or 16-year-old boy. It wouldn't be very politically correct on a movie, though... ;)

Didn't know this. Assumed he was "my age" at the time (which was ~20).

Agreed x2. :D

... and all of this makes me wonder about a celebrity entry into the survivour contest. :D Can I write a hot sex story about Litizens without falling to parody, and who would be cast in their roles? :D

Hmmmmm LOL. Would anyone mind?

As long as it's not parody, I'm game. Let's see ... my character ... hmmm ... LOL :D

Oh! I was having a blast reading Glamorama, because amongst all the characters there's one who is described as a Christian Bale lookalike; there's Patrick Bateman, who was played by Christian Bale in the American Psycho movie; and there's Christian Bale himself. :D

Oh, that's a cool idea. Get Milla Jovovich to play (a slightly older) me. She has the right look, and even has an accent. :D

You are sexy.

Hm, Well who would play Imp? These are questions I need to think about. It certainly might be a different take on the category, using stars to play Litizens. :D OH - my mind is swirling :D

I was about to suggest Dune. I always used to cast that one in my head.

I'd go the complete opposite way from the typical US films of the noble family having American accents and the bastards being upper class English. I always pictured the Atreides as being English, apart from Duncan Idaho and Gurney Halleck, who'd have Harkonnen (American) accents because they came from there originally.

David Thewlis was always Liet-Kynes. David Boreaneaz was Duncan Idaho and Kris Kristofferson was Gurney Halleck. Ian McKellen in his 'Apt Pupil' style role would be Thufir Hawat. Nicole de Boer (Cube) would have made a superb Chani: http://img5.allocine.fr/img_cis/images/metrofilms/cube/img/acteurs/boer_img.gif

I never managed to cast the main parts though, just the secondary roles.

I hated all of the film adaptions. Tosh, tosh, tosh. But then again, the only films that have ever been better than the quality of the book they're based on were the LotR trilogy and High Fidelity. If I like the book, then it's fairly certain that I'll hate the film.

Shanglan would be Vincent Kartheiser with the long floppy hair he had in Angel Season 4. Nicely androgynous.
