Nikolai escorted her into the restaurant and watched as the heads turned. They took their seats and waited for Yeltsin to show up.

"Compared to the usual conservative girls that come in here, yes," he said, kissing her on the lips. "There she is now," he said, waving her over and smiling.

Yeltsin sat down at the table and ordered a cognac. "So, you kill my daughter, meet up with this American slut, and then you have the nerve to meet me for dinner?" she asked. "Why should I let you walk away from this table?"

"Your daughter was a nuisance, Mrs. Yeltsin," Alexis said softly. "And this American slut goes by the name of Alexis Clark."

"Fish sounds good," he said. "By the way, Yeltsin, I didn't kill her." he handed her the phone. "Dial this number and talk."

"Prove you're her," she said. "This American and my old associate claim they didn't shoot you. Tell me the story."

"'This American,'" Alexis hissed under her breath to Nikolai. "I gave my name!"

"It's me, Mom, trust me. I'm safe, too. They didn't kill me, alright? Jesus, this could be a reason I'm happier. My identity was in question every time I even walked in the door from getting the mail!" Lydia said, sighing on the phone. "Look, I'm alive. Look at the tape again, woman! It never showed me."

She hung up the phone. "Get dessert to go," she said. "We're going back to my workshop to see if you're telling the truth. The girl is convincing, but I need to see the tape again."

Alexis smiled, deciding to make a little dig. "Nikolai always gets his dessert to go," she said with a smile.

"You presume too much," she said. "He was only ever my subordinate. I have a car waiting, now order so we can go."
