You eventually get whitelisted after leaving a good number of comments. How many? Hearsay speaks of 50 to 100; there might be other criteria at play, too, since the process isn’t transparent at all.
I don't leave that many comments, so that's probably why then.
I was whitelisted after perhaps 10 comments and a handful of stories.

Increasing their moderation load hardly seems rational. With captcha in place, why are comments moderated at all? (And if there is a need, why not farm this off to volunteers, like the forums?)
Botspam isn't the only abuse of the comment system. The captcha surely must be making moderation more effective by keeping the botspam out of moderators' faces.
To remove html and spam from comments. The site doesn't moderate content, that's left up to the recipients.
The simplest way to deal with that is to make plain text the only format for comments. Nothing to render, nothing clickable. This can be fully automated.
OK, the issue is that - despite being logged in, my comments are treated as Anonymous. The posts as says Anonymous and there is no EmilyMiller option. But when I click on login, it’s says I’m already logged in (because I am). WTAF?

Much the same over the last decade, I reckon. I see no discernible shift in anything much, so far as forum moderation is concerned. It happens, but it's only ever been low key and occasional.

I’ve posted on the Tech Forum, sent Laurel and Manu a PM and filed a bug report. They should be aware.
I've discovered a way round it. If you open the site without logging in, navigate to the story you want to comment on, go to the comments section and THEN login, it let's you post under your author name. It just worked for me, anyway.
That could be useful information. If it's a repeatable workaround, then it tells Manu something about where to look for the login information not being read correctly.
