Captcha for comments?

Has anyone else had to fill in a captcha to comment on a story? And my comment will be reviewed first too, for the first time in nearly three years.

I hope not, that'll add even more of a disincentive to leave comments to not only have to do the captcha, but also not see it appear for several days. Either captcha or moderation, not both. Must be real dire on their end to implement something like this.

I suppose they're for different things: bots spamming the comments, and humans posting links. Hopefully the review part at least will be faster now.

But yes, it's a bit annoying, and I'm sure it will lead to fewer comments. Presumably the site didn't make this change lightly.

I just sent myself a test comment on my latest story. No captcha, instant send, appeared on my CP within fifteen seconds.

Have been for years, every since the new format arrived. My comments have posted immediately for several years - there was a short batch lag at one point, but so long ago I can't remember when.

Phew, it's not a general change. I just posted a comment (coincidentally on one of SugarStorm's, an old favourite that was short enough to re-read for a test), and it appeared instantly. There was a problem over the last couple of days of only being able to post anonymously unless you switched back to Classic - was this widespread or did it only apply under some conditions? Anyway, everything's working as it should for me (beta testing on), the way it was a few days ago.

I tried it from my old computer, and the comment posted immediately. I had to do it from Private Browsing, though, because otherwise it would only let me comment as Anonymous.

So maybe this was a combination of my new computer and the only-anonymous posting glitch.

I had a situation two days ago where the site wouldn't let me comment as THBGato - I could only comment anonymously. I copied my comment, tried logging in again, but it still wouldn't let me. So I had to use the captcha and comment anonymously.

Working fine this morning though...

That happened to me, except on the stories I had left open in tabs to read later. Those, I got the normal comment box when I got to the end of the story, even if I hadn't left it on the last page of the story. However, any story I opened after that had the comment section broken.

I submitted a bug report and it was resolved in less than a day. That might have just been coincidental timing though.

@sirhugs left a comment 2 or 3 days ago. I can see. It is not on the site.

So my conclusion is that the comment function is broken. It is not like all of us writers are dying for comments .....

I've been on a white list for four or five years now, I think, so far as commentary is concerned.

My comments always get reviewed. I was not aware this wasn't a thing that everyone dealt with.
