What a fun movie. No surprises, but it makes great use of the CGI, is clever, well directed and acted and just..****! :D Not to mention the bad guy's really cool coat which is going to have every Steampunk fan drooling and copying it (Stella, call your sister!)-- I suppose the genre of this film should rightly be called Axispunk? Alliespunk?

It's a glorious time-warp of a film, not back to real WWII, but into Hollywood/pulp/comic book WWII of a different but similar universe. Presented in the most respectful and affectionate fashion, this was a film made with love for its subject matter on all levels.

Not for little kids, but fine for older kids and adults of all ages.

Thanks for the review! I'm actually going to see this later today as a treat to myself for quitting smoking for 6 months. And I absolutely adore Chris Evans *reowr*

I'm still debating as to whether or not to see it in 3-D though. I haven't been to a 3-D movie since I was a teenager. Leaves me wondering a few things like:

Do I wear the 3-D glasses over my own glasses or under?
When do I put the 3-D glasses on or do I wear them through the whole movie?

Yeah, silly questions, I know, but like I said, I haven't been to a 3-D movie since I was a teenager. Go ahead and laugh if you want. :)

They go over your regular glasses and after a couple of minutes watching the movie you don't know they're there. No problem.

Ditto what VM said about the 3-D glasses. The 3-D is good in this movie, not necessary, but good and, I think, worth having for the credits if nothing else. These glasses won't, like earlier versions, leave you with a headache unless the movie is very long, which this movie is not. It moves at a wonderfully fast clip, too.

Seen "Cowboys and Aliens" yet? HM and I were looking at the credits with interest, even though I think it would have made a better comedy with a title like that! :D

Thanks for the quick replies on the 3-D glasses. I felt kinda silly asking, but like I said it's been a long time since I went to a 3-D movie and I didn't know the "rules of engagement" for today's 3-D technology.

Ooooooooo . . . that coat! Yeah, steampunk leathers. More, more!
Tell me about it! (And like I said, I suspect it's more accurately, um, Axis-Punk or, if you'd prefer, Deco-Punk). Everyone and their brother is going to be copying that coat (why is it that villains have the best fashion sense?). I predict that coat will show up at every Sci-Fi and Steampunk convention for the next year and a half on at least a dozen people. Those long double rows of lovely silver buttons and the subtle red accents...Swoon!

Not out yet, dude! July 29th. It's going up against the Smufs

Odd. The people I went to see it with last night all came out thinking it was very weak. The first 2/3's is fun, but there isn't anything to the last 1/3 other than the usual beat up the one-dimensional cookie-cutter nazi madman. I was half-expecting to be reading about a critical savaging, but it seems to have gone down well.

I wonder if it might be a American thing. I'm curious to see what the reviews will be like when it comes out in Britain next week.

I did like all the little Marvel in-jokes. It's a shame they didn't sneak in a Samuel Jackson cameo to head up his Howling Commandos.

Fun, but too cheesy for me.

(I want that jacket too...)

I haven't seen the movie, but I would expect the Red Skull's jacket to also be adorned with swastikas. I doubt the fashion conscious will include them too.

I can understand how people might see it that way--maybe my expectations were lower and that's wasn't let down. I do find it interesting that most reviewers, including the very positive ones, seem to have missed a lot of things I noted and liked (reverberations of the theme of past and present, the "Americana" theme, etc.)--but perhaps people don't expect thematic elements in such movies and so don't remark on them even if they see 'em.

I'm wondering if they're going to tell us the black guy in the howling commandos was his granddad....

See? I'm telling you, people are going to go to that movie just to take notes on the jacket.

Hydra Symbol

 Box, Box, Box! That earns you a failing grade on your Marvel Universe test! The Red Skull was, indeed, a Nazi, but he outgrows the Nazis, viewing himself as far superior to Hitler, and turns the secret Nazi organization he's been given into his own: Hydra.

It is the Hydra symbol that he wears as a patch on his shoulder. Which, having no history in our world, makes it perfectly acceptable, unlike a swastika.

I'm pretty sure, however, that most folk will simply copy the jacket and leave off the symbol or put on one of their own. It's the look and style of it, not the patch on the shoulder, which has everyone drooling for it.

I'm seeing positive reviews from the sources off the mainstream that I trust as well. Nothing overly glowing, but recommended viewing. The general consensus is that it's better than Thor, which they also gave a recommend, but you won't be blown away review. Same general range for X-Men First Class.

Usually, I get more enjoyment out of the films than these reviewers do ( they're all semi-pro filmmakers, and thus suffer from the same inability to ignore little things we all suffer as writers when we read ) so I'm expecting some good things when I pick them up on DVD.

Haven't seen any of the super-hero or cartoon flicks this year. I've got a day off on Wednesday, so maybe I'll go give Cap a viewing. Few days after release, mid-afternoon, mid-week should be a good time to avoid most of the annoying people and find a good seat.

Well, I went into it expecting a good action movie and that's what I got. Will it win any Oscars? Maybe for special effects, but who knows.

It was fun to watch a movie in 3-D, regardless if it was a good movie or not. Being that I don't go to the theater to see movies that much these days because of ticket prices, I think I got my money's worth. I was entertained for 2 hours and that's all I expected.

Next time I go to a movie, however, I'll try an earlier showing and will probably skip the whole 3-D thing. It was fun once, but I think it's being a bit over done now.

I was surprised that there weren't more people in the theater when I went, Dark. I chose the 7:20 show, opening weekend (when I usually try to avoid opening weekend when I DO go to the movies) and I noticed the lines at the box office for that particular time of day were quite short....at the concessions too.....maybe only 4 or 5 people ahead of me.

The movie is set during WW2. I remember reading about the Red Skull a long time ago. (No, not that long) He was a young soldier who was so intensely loyal to Hitler he was made an SS officer and Hitler designed a special outfit for him. This included the mask he wore. Later, he became a super-villain, along with the small group who were known as The Outcasts, or something like that. He'd be about 90 years old now.

Marvel has reworked the Red Skull over the years since Joe Simon and Jack Kirby created him in the 40's. He originally wore a green body suit with a huge swastika on the chest, then appeared in various other costumes. He originally wore a mask, then it was intimated that it really was his head. In one story the Skull was unmasked as a Hitler look alike. He's the most enduring of all the Marvel villains.

Hydra was originally a criminal organization that 'Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.' scrapped with all the time.

All that's been tossed out--and has been out for a long time. Currently he wears no mask (that's what he looks like all the time), he's not so loyal to Hitler, and he wears a special outfit he designed. That's current comic book. The movie adds another dimensions as to why he is why he is--and actually I think this new twist works and will probably end up in the comic.

That's funny books for ya. Always rewriting themselves. When Lex Luther was once a mad scientist before they changed him into a business tycoon, and he was also once Superman's best friend from Smallville. Every new writer and incarnation, they change the characters and renew them.

9/10

I am really digging the new Marvel movies. For this one, they could have gone the misguided root and focused so much on Captain America that it would feel like a small-scale mess, but they did a remarkable job of making it feel like it was part of WWII, in a world wide epic of a story. Good job.

Very fun too.

Also, I think that Hugo Weaving could play Ming the Merciless if they ever decide to remake Flash Gordon ;)

I believe they are re-making Flash Gordon. I don't know if Hugo wants to keep playing the bad guy...then again, he always gets to wear the best clothes when he does, and he wears them so well.

Did you like his coat? ;)

Now now, he played Elrond in Lord of the Rings. Not an evil character, or even a villain of any kind. A bit of an ass, but he was trying to protect his daughter, and had lost faith in man. I really don't blame him for either.

And I didn't care about the coats.

Comic books -- specifically Marvel -- taught me to read, much moreso than school did. Cap has always been my absolute favorite (though the Punisher has always given him a good run for his money with me).

I was absolutely thrilled with this film. As stated, it's not gonna win Oscars, but it wasn't trying to do that. I am disappointed a bit that there wasn't any explicit involvement in the war itself -- the swastikas are few and far between, for instance, and they don't stick Cap in or near any historical battles -- but there's room for that in flashbacks and such later if they decide to do that. Past that, my complaints are minor and my praise is great.

I am so happy with this film I can't wait to see it again.
