Can't think of any place else to ask this question.

I've composed this question for other forums, those not focused on erotica, and I just can't come up with anything that won't simply trigger a deluge of accusations of transphobia/trans-hate. I've posted here before about curiosity being a driving force for me, about my confusion about transgender issues (but not hate or anything like that). So here's hoping the accepting qualities of AH hold true.

Sofia Nelson's voice is extremely feminine. The photographs of them looks just like a good looking man. I think somewhere I saw that the photo was supplied by Sofia.

So how is Sofia currently presenting? As male or female?

For those of you who don't follow politics, Sofia Nelson was a close friend of J D Vance at Yale law school and later.

The question I have is why is it necessary for you to get J.D. Vance and the present election cycle involved with this story? It's tricky although not impossible to get real-life people into Lit stories, especially when politics is involved. If you fictionalize the plot with some of the aspects of the real situation you probably will be in safer territory. How you present the Sofia Nelson or equivalent character doesn't seem that important.

Best I can tell, they (Sofia Nelson) have had gender affirming surgery. (NYT article indicates that Vance was there for them when they recovered.)
From appearances, I'd guess they were born female and transitioned to male but I don't have anything to back that up but my opinion, and you know exactly how much you just paid for that...

As a trans woman, I'd like to offer my apology that you have to worry about asking what is effectively a benign question and worry about repercussions. I so long for a world where people like me can get the help and acceptance we need without all the drama and strife.

I'm not planning on writing a story. Just curious about something in the news.

I do not know of the person mentioned.
IMO...
I think the problem is the world is still in transition... No pun intended...
Growing up as children, we associate people in genders. It's what parents teach....
As a world we are still coming to grips with somebody identifying as being fluid, or genderless...
From young ages, we are put in boxes, given labels, and it's how our brains function...
These days we are still coming to grips with how we address the issue of how we speak or write about somebody who is non-binary... Without being offensive.
For people transitioning, ot coming to grips with their own persona... It can be a touchy subject...

I think non-binary.

I didn't know of them until this post, but it seems they had top surgery, and this article refers to Nelson as they/them.

Agreed.

It's not uncommon for somebody to ID as "butch lesbian" for a while, then eventually decide that "non-binary" is a better fit, taking some steps towards masculine presentation without going all the way. For instance, Hannah Gadsby moved from "she" to "they" a couple of years back and has started on testosterone supplements as part of that, but still goes by Hannah.

In such cases the answer to "does XXX present as male or female?" could be "yes", "no", "bit of both" or "some days M, some days F", depending on the individual.

I'm transgender and all this pronoun shit just confuses the hell out of me.
Refer to me whoever you want. I promise not to choose to be offended.

(not limited to the reals of good taste. Your mileage may vary depending on my mood)

No. They spell it Sofia, not Sophia. I found that person, too, when I was Googling. Look at the NYT link up thread.
I've looked up my own name at times, and I have a lot of doppelgangers out there. Apparently I died in St. Louis in 1967.

Judging by the photos and the blurbs, I'd say he's** transgender female to male.

** note, I didn't read in far enough to find out how he/they refer to themselves - that would be the pronoun to use, not what anyone else might think.

She was on NPR earlier this week.
