Canonical answer for Header and Blockquote support

I'm seeing conflicting documentation and implementation for story previews regarding what HTML is actually supported by literotica.

The official documentation does not list headers (h1, h2, ... h6) as supported, but the documentation regarding writing stories in markdown lists an example with
## Chapter Two: Getting Off
being converted to
<h2>Chapter Two: Getting Off</h2>
and displaying the h2 as rendered.

However, if I type <h2>Foo</h2> in a new story and click preview, the h2 is stripped, leaving unformatted Foo.

The official documentation also says that <blockquote>s are supported HTML elements, but, again, if I type <blockquote>Foo</blockquote> into a new story and preview it, the HTML tag is stripped.

I don't want to write a story and pray that the tags are supported, and if they aren't, edit the story and wait two weeks for it to be approved. Does anyone know for certain whether these tags are actually supported as documented?

You should assume, that except for the officially listed tags, that tags may be stripped and to not rely on them for formatting.

@EmilyMiller You there girlfriend?
I call her out because I know she does this quite a bit.

Are you finding that the Preview doesn’t render your formatting?

I found that whitespace doesn’t always come out as expected or hoped, but otherwise it has been reliable for me. I have definitely used it effectively for correcting formatting before committing to the Publish period.

HTML isn’t Markdown.

Do you have an objection to doing it the way the documentation states, and going

##My Header

?

Here’s the canonical list of supported HTML tags.
https://www.literotica.com/faq/publishing/publishing-text-formatting

H2 isn’t on it.
I'm well aware that HTML is not Markdown. No where in the documentation does it say that Markdown is supported directly by Literotica, nor does it work when previewing, though that would be amazing.

You should assume, that except for the officially listed tags, that tags may be stripped and to not rely on them for formatting.
I would assume that, too, but it turns out that <ul> and <ol> are supported, but not documented. The documentation you linked does not include blockquotes but the documentation I linked does, and both appear to be official documentation by literotica.

I can't tell, tbh. If I use <b>, <em>, etc, it does work as expected. <h2> and <blockquote> don't display in the preview, despite some documentation saying they should.

Hi,

You’re meant to say EmilyMiller three times while looking in a mirror, then turn around.

I’ve not explored everything, but I used the following:

<b>, or <strong> both work
<em>, or <i> both work
<u>
<kbd>

<ul>
<ol> and of course <li>

<center>

<br> because line breaks are turned into <p>text</p> - so useful if you want to - say - add lyrics or a poem without it spacing the lines too far

<a> I’ve not tried the in-document anchors, so no idea if they work (tricky to use anyway as stories get split into separate pages), but the <a href…> flavor works, so long as you are linking to Literotica

I tried tables and that didn’t work.

Maybe others could add to the above if I have missed something.

Hah, I'm surprised that <kbd> works, but cool. I've tried all of those, too, except for, like you, <a>.

I vaguely remember trying <blockquote> once and it not working, but I don't remember for certain.

Oh and I tried <blockquote> and no it doesn’t work.

I think you can use <hr> but I get more creative with my dividers (thanks @Djmac1031 😊).

A general caveat. If you are going to use, say, <em> then always close each paragraph with </em> and start the next with <em>. The reason is that - as above - stories get spread across pages and you might get your markup chopped in half.

Em

I don't suppose you know if <a id="foo"> works so I can then link to ...#foo in another story, do you?
No - as I mention above, I haven’t - because you can’t predict the URL of a story page in advance. It could be on page 3 or 4, which have different URLs.

You could go back and add anchors after publication, but who has the time?

I vote you start signing your posts </Em> instead. It seems likely this joke has been made before, though.

... I have the time. Or rather, I'm such a perfectionist, that I'd do it. I just feel bad for the moderators. 😅

Blockquote used to work. I've used it numerous times. Haven't needed it since they upgraded the submission form, though. Guess it's been depreciated.

Even if the preview doesn't render it, it should still be in the base document that is available to Laurel after you hit submit. A special request in the notes section could get it through as formatted. It's a matter of whether Laurel feels like dealing with it. Same for <br /> for single spacing. I had a couple that had the formatting stripped back in the day. A request + a willingness to wait longer than usual for publication could be persuasive.

No, we only told you this was the way so we'd get to see your bum.

Oh... wait. Now that I read it, you're saying you manifest *behind* us?

Em!

Sounds like you need to spin around two and a half times, to keep correctly oriented. This sounds more complicated than Morris dancing.

All of the formating is way beyond my ability. I invariably miss something. Therefore, because I'm a lazy girl, I use RTF and it always is pretty damn close to what I want.
