Canada from Eh to Zed

Every Canuck knows who Don Cherry is, even if they've never watched a game of hockey in their life.

Here's some vintage Cherry for ya.

I was terribly happy when NBC brought Don Cherry on for pre-game analysis of the men's hockey final. It was so appropriate.

I have to admit, I am a Canadian hockey fan, and I hate Don Cherry. I do get a laugh out of his suits though.

We WILL make you laugh

Lorne Michaels, creator of Saturday Night Live, (and Canuck), once commented that Canada could not have made my favourite movie It’s a Wonderful Life because that statement is way too boastful for Canadians. Had it been made here, it would have been titled It’s an Alright Life.

To me, that statement neatly sums up much of what it means, to me, to be Canadian – humility and comedy. Humour, in the form of comedians, is probably our biggest cultural export. But why are we so darn funny?

Is it because we live in the shadow of a giant? Mark Breslin, founder of the Yuk Yuk’s chain of comedy clubs, (and another Canuck), has said, “Comedy is the cry of the intelligent and powerless.” Possibly. I also think that by not being in the spotlight we are in a unique position to stand back and observe the pop culture we are flooded with from our southern neighbours.

Or maybe it’s because we are starved for attention and what better way to get noticed than by playing the class clown?

Whatever the reason, I like living in a place where we laugh long and hard…and most often at ourselves.

Here's one of my favourite Canuck funny people in action.

You guys are gonna claim Tom Green? Really? I'd be disowning him in a minute.

You know, in person, he's actually a very, very nice fellow, soft spoken and almost shy.

Lance and I both worked on that terrible movie of his and L sustained a minor eye injury. Anyway, Tom spotted L and me having dinner and came over and talked with us and was genuinely concerned about the big bandage around L's head. Most actors really couldn't give a shit about stunt people, so I was impressed.

But, yes, he is a freak on camera.

Okay, that was cool. I love the jersey at the end. That was a great touch :D

I happened to catch an old segment on the CBC last night, with Ferrence and Suzuki, and I was just so impressed by this guy and how forward thinking and well spoken he is.

He rides his bike everywhere, he buys local and organic, etc. He says he takes some razzing from the other players but he doesn't care because he wants a good planet for his daughter when she grows up.

I had to go look up why the Canadiens are called "The Habs". It never made a lick of sense to me. Can't say that I'm much better off now that I've read the explanation.

Weird-ass Canucks :p

You found that it's from "les habitants" or "the locals," right? I wonder if there's any connection with Habitant brand soups, which used to be a favorite imported product in the French Canadian community where I grew up.

Yup. Weird.

Yup. Weird.

Is it really all that strange? The Yankees are often called the Bronx Bombers and it seems to me that most pro teams have nicknames that are generally used only locally. To my ear, Les Habitants is the rough equivalent of "Our Guys."

I find a lot of sports slang weird.

Done!

(Mind you, we drink Kokanee in this neck of the woods - the Kokanee glacier being just a hop, skip and a long fucking hike away)

Had a chance to try poutine for the first time when I was in Toronto earlier this year. I passed because I wanted to try it in Québec or Montréal first on the assumption that it would be more authentic there. I want my waiter/waitress to offer it up to me en français, s'il vous plaît.

Poutine is very much an eastern thing. (Frankly, it grosses me out to look at).

Out west, the delicacy is pot brownies. ;)

I could go for a plate of those. I'm guessing that the ordinary tourist might not be able to buy some at the local muffin shop, right?

Actually, you'd be surprised. LOL.

(Kidding, kidding, kidding...kids, don't try this at home).

But, to speak frankly, having grown up in BC, I was really shocked when I learned that other places in the world do not have such a laid back attitude toward the "herb".

I would say that of all the BCers I know, of all ages and all different walks of life, about 90% partake of it. Either now, or in the past, some maybe once a year, some every day. With rare exception, we just don't see it as a big deal out here.
