Can you explain this to me?

Just another thing I don't get in life....

I went out today in pursuit of workout clothes. I've been going to the gym for a couple of months now and surprised myself by enjoying it alot!

I've spent the past couple of months wearing pj bottoms and old tshirts to workout in - telling myself that once I lost some weight I would treat myself with some new clothes.

Well, like I said, it's been a few months and while I feel like I haven't made to much physical progress, I feel GREAT and decided I needed to get some new stuff. Went to all the different sporting goods stores figuring they would have the largest selection of sizes and was SOOOO disappointed with what I found. I managed to find some stuff...but not after I spent the whole day searching.

So after all that...here's what I need explained...

Why is it that our American society is gung-ho about everyone going out and getting fit and losing weight - and yet the only excercise clothes they make are for teeny tiny people!

ARGH!!! I hate shopping!!!!!

An excellent point! And one I have no answer for. I just wanted to let you know you weren't the only one who's been thru that. I stuck with my baggy shorts and t-shirts. Good luck!!

Gotta know where to look, darlin. I've never found good fitness wear outside of large metro areas where there's a tremendous fitness industry. Read: "Venice Beach."

I like this mag.

Exercise clothes are hard to find period.:(

If you want to look on-line go to

They have a wide selection.

You can also try any nutrition stores in your area. They usually carry workout gear.

I actually went to Dick's Sporting Goods, Lady Footlocker...and goodness knows where else. While both had a pretty good selection...nothing above an XL really.

I found a few things at Dicks...very few...but oh so expensive.

I finally found some tops by Nike at Marshall's and TJ Maxx - just in my favorite price range - cheap! :)

but it's just so frustrating that they say that the average person is overweight - but then the clothing industry doesn't make any clothes for those people to wear....GRRRR...

However...I will say this for the tops I bought...they were all XL - which is smaller than I usually wear - so I have either lost some inches or the clothes just run large....I'll just assume that I've lost some inches, pat myself on the back, and continue with my exhilarating workouts!

Just remember, stay away from the scale. When people first start working out they want to see how much weight they have lost, and they go hop on a scale and are disapointed. Remember, muscle weighs mor than fat. So you will be losing inches but your weight might not drop as fast as you want.

Go by how your clothes fit.

Good luck.:)

I've never used this site, but it looks promising:

I was looking for a store that I've seen in the malls. It's for larger/curvier women, and I've seen tasteful lingerie ads in the windows. I would bet they carry workout clothes as well. Anyone have a clue what I'm talking about? It's usually near Lerner's New York.

Probably Layne Bryant or The Avenue and neither carry workout clothes that are worth the money they ask for them. A few washes and they are done for. My experience.

The new Layne Bryant lingere is a keeper though!!! :D

I think I have it figured out! It's not that they make the clothing just for teeny tiny people, it is that there are soo many bigger people, that the bigger (read normal) sizes sell out first!

You've got to be fast! LOL :D

PB - Lane Bryant bras are cute and comfy (finally) and longer lasting. Although I discovered with their panties you have to buy a size smaller than you would normally wear in pants - which is actually quite encouraging in a way!
Plus...since I'm so young...I don't feel like I'm buying granny clothes - which is what frustrates me about other stores. Although I have to say I have not been impressed with their recent fashion trends. Call me silly, but IMHO some of their clothing shouldn't be manufactured for larger women - too small...too tight - and oh so frustrating when those are the majority of the options out there. However as much I don't like to see those things on larger women - more power to the ones who feel comfortable wearing them.

Ebony - well, while that is an interesting theory, I still fear it is untrue. Considering there are so few stores that carry larger sizes (which is probably why I hate shopping so much) it is just too hard for me to believe in...as much as I honestly want to.

I HATE going to the mall...and do it only when necessary. I get nauseous when I walk past Abercromibe, Gap, Express...all those frickin' teeny people stores. And the other thing that truly pisses me off is how tight and tiny clothing is these days. Part of my job involves going to elementary and middle schools - and when I see what some of these girls where - I am so completely shocked at what parents let their kids walk out of the house wearing.

It just makes me say....GRRRRRR....

If you were in Canada, Cotton Ginny Plus has a good range of workout clothes in larger sizes. They carry everything from leggings to bodysuits, bra tops, etc.

What are workout clothes anyway??? I wear shorts and a tee shirt...and you can find them anywhere.

If you're dressing for style, you'll have to really shop around. If you're in there to workout, sweat and get stinky, try Army fatigues. They are great breathers, allow great flexability, and they're relatively cheap.
I powerlift, and with a fifty-two inch chest, I have to really look around, usually at a "big and tall" store. So in a twisted way, I know of your problem! Good Luck and don't stop! :D

It's not that I'm concerned about looking stylish while I working out - because that is totally not my style.

But I'm just looking for clothes that are slightly cooler - temp wise- to wear. When I workout right I get really hot - so I'm looking for sports bra tanks and capri leggings and stuff. I tend to stay away from shorts cause I find they ride up and then I'm self-concious.

But thanks for feeling my grief everyone!
