Marijuana is wrongfully demonized by the government as being extremely dangerous and deadly (it's not!).

From what I've heard, it isn't any more or less harmful to your health than tobacco cigarettes.

Is it actually possible to overdose and die from Marijuana? I have never even heard of a single documented case of this.

However, excessive and prolonged pot use can affect your memory and other cognitive functions though.

The only reason marijuana is illegal is because the government can't tax it.

no, you can't. its been proven that peanuts are more dangerous than pot.

effecting memory is bullshit. although short term is effected while you are high. but you remember later. during reagans time in office as goernor of california, he used a bad study to say pot destroys brain cells. they forced monkeys to breathe the smoke. what they didn't tell you, was that that is all they breathed. no oxygen. no oxygen, dead brain cells.
recent studies that have been released shows that pot is effective against cancer. and thus could prevent cancer.

I've taken a more...anecdotal...approach to the whole pot's fine v. pot's terrible debate.

I just look at the people I know who smoke it...and the people I know who don't smoke it...and draw my own conclusions.

If you're sitting in you mom's basement getting stoned, you're not out working and that hurts the GDP.

I don't use any drugs and never have but will admit to drinking socially for years. I have had more than I should have on several occasions so I feel like I am an expert on alcohol's mind warping effects. :D My question is why have we legalized alcohol and left other chemicals as illegal? Seems to me that the effects of pot wears off quicker whereas a drunk will stagger around for hours before they come to their senses. Do we want to take the lid off of pandora's box or will it have much effect at all to legalize it? Would making different drugs legal reduce the crime rate? Increase taxes? Would our society crumble as a result? I dunno these answers but as usual our government, and to some extent society, for many many years seems to be quite hypocritical in makng some decisions.

It may not be lethal, but for sure it fucks up your head with long-term, heavy use.
I have a friend who is completely screwed up - paranoid, depressed, psychotic on occasion - and his doctor blames the heavy use of marijuana.
He smoked from the moment he woke up till he passed out at night, every day for 20 plus years. I never saw him straight.

That is sad. Could the human body even withstand that type of alcohol abuse on such a level for that long? Must be difficult to see a friend struggle and be helpless to deter them.

You can die from an overdose of anything. Alcohol, salt, potassium, water. It's just that an overdose of pot would mean so much of it that it's pretty impractical.

its not the weed that is doing it. he has underlying mental/social problems that the pot makes more aware of.
there are people who think they are dieing when they toke. or the cops are just around the corner.
the pot didn't do it. they are already like that.
i conquered my little demons. i toke, i go about my normal day, but just buzzed.
if i mix weed and alcohol, that's when shit gets really weird. the alcohol lowers inhibitions, and i have a don't give a fuck attitude. i could end up naked in the snow in a field, or just running through the woods, or make an extreme stupid decision of driving, even if on a back country road with no chances of seeing a cop.
when i toke, i have CONSTRUCTIVE paranoia. as in, no i am not driving. no, do not strip and run around in a snowy field.

I'm aware that there is a school of thought out there that say it only exacerbates underlying mental issues.
Still, if you know that, why would you risk it by going so heavy?
I tried it a few times, but didn't like the way it made me lose time.

Some people are cool when stoned... My man, for example, gets busy.
And I mean BUSY!
He'll have a choof, and then set about doing jobs like mowing lawns, repairing fences, pulling weeds... and he keeps going for hours without a break.
But he only has one or two hits a week when he's home. Never more than that.

I don't think I could handle if he were a full-on user.

There's a simple saying that answers this and others along this line.

Too much of anything can be harmful and/or deadly.

The stance against pot is that it leads to harder drugs even though studies have determined it does not. I think many people have been brain washed with this foolish notion.

....Including the people in this thread.....

My one friend uses marijuana for a medical reason, and this is something he has never heard, but it does help him, so more power to him...

He has epilepsy and if he feels the funny 'pre-seizure' symptoms and takes a few tokes in time, he doesn't go into a full one. He found this after they took him off Dilantin (which he liked) to other drugs (which he didn't for their side-effects) and someone gave him a joint once before he had a seizure. He knows it is stopgap, but won't take and doesn't trust the new drugs at all.

The only time he has said he "ODed" on mairjuana, he waited too long to take some and then hit a bong for the first time. He went right into a seizure that time, and mostly because he himself has said the pot was too late to be effective.

everyone handles it differently. but that is their underlying mental attitude.
i'm like your man. i get stoned, and i can't sit still. i want to do stuff.
others, all they want to do is eat, watch tv, or play video games. they spend too much time in their own head navel gazing, which can lead to depression, etc..
i toke once or twice a day , but only once or twice a week. but i do this because i know that whatever kind you smoke, your brain can only absorb so much THC. once all the receptors are full, you can't get any higher. your done until the brain cleanses itself. people fool themselves into thinking they can keep the level of high/stone going 24 hours a day. it's impossible.

Your lit wife?

Yah there have been a few threads around for awhile about having a Lit spouse, so I did a silly one in the glbt forums and she took me up on it. Silly bizness but that's me most of the time. (or at least it was before I wandered to the dark side of Lit)
