Can two authors share the same story

Not sure exactly how that works, but there's an Authors Chain Stories category for things like this. I know @EmilyMiller and @Djmac1031 have a shared universe thing going. They might have insight. I'm also pretty certain others will be chiming in with more info than you want very soon. :)

That's honestly a good question that requires a little more info.

Are you planning on publishing the story complete? or will there be chapters with each author taking turns.

Is each author actually writing the story, each writing an individual chunk then handing it off? Or is one the idea person while the other actually writes? All of the above?

@EmilyMiller and have cowritten two stories, Traffic and Traffic 2. Our simple solution was for Emily to publish them on her page and simply list me as coauthor.

Our shared Angels and Demons universe is different in that while we collaborate on ideas and the world building, we each write our own individual stories. Sometimes characters will cross over and events in one story may affect another. But they're still individual stories credited to and published by their respective author.

To build on the above, I think there is some convoluted special request you can make to Laurel (the site owner). But I’ve never done this and don’t know the details.

Other than that, your options are:

  1. One author publishes it and acknowledges the other as a co-author
  2. You create a new account which will only publish co-authored stuff, so if your collaborator is jane_summer, you create a winter_summer account

It can only go under one name. A few years ago I created a tag team challenge where we drew partners to write with. The originals were published under a pen name for the event, but once the authors were revealed they had to decide who's name the story would shift to.

Yes you can.

I've done it this way:

Decide who's account will carry the whole story. Then, the co-writer prepares an intro version, say the first thousand words, and sets up a link at the end, to the full story.

Coordinate the two submissions at exactly the same time, with a Note to the Editor (Laurel) explaining what you're doing, asking her to link the stories together.

Here's an example:

A collaborative story - introduction

Note the introduction, and scroll down to see how I did the hand-over.

This approach was in fact suggested by Laurel, after I approached her for advice.

I was actually curious too.

i wanted to approach someone with an Idea of a story, where i would write from one persons perspective and they would write from the MC lover or someone else critical to story. I would post my perspective on mine and she\he would post theirs on their profile.

could that work if we link the profile and how would readers react to that?

The words Goldberg and Rube come to mind 🤣.

Two stories linked to each other? That's easy enough, and works on the same principle as my post above. Just coordinate the links through Laurel.

Readers will react to the quality of the writing, as they usually do. The linked stories won't make much difference.

That's precisely what the SRP forum is for. Just go there. It's very active and people looking for partners daily/constantly.

I'm facing the same situation, in a way. When she passed away, Athalia had a story which I was editing. It was mostly written, and I felt that I had a duty to post it in her name. I think I'll add a comment to the beginning saying that it was mostly her work, with a little of the stuff that she asked me to put in or clarify. But it wasn't a collaboration in the sense that we both shared authorship.
