I've been playing monitor the last several days, trying to keep my big yap shut (other than greeting the newcomers) while the dust settled from the recent hoopla. And, so, I've taken time that I'd usually spend posting and read a much larger percentage of the threads than usual. I feel like I've gained a new appreciation for the whole group of people that make up this board.
Today, I'm going to meet cym in person, after a year of talking pretty much daily. It's also my husband's birthday, and less than two weeks after our fifth wedding anniversary. I also made my first ever *sale* of a short story to a magazine, which is an embarassingly huge thrill for me. I'm in one of those expansive I-Love-the-World moods, and I'm just going to embrace it.
So, here's what I propose. The next thread that you read, note a poster or two who's posted to it before you. In other words, let's focus on more than the usual suspects--close friends or an S.O.--in praising or appreciating someone's qualities. Then, come here and list some things that you like about those people.
There will be no negativity--do not rain on my fucking parade! Thank you.
Predictably enough, I suppose, I'll start:
*SpectreT impresses me as a sharp witted, eclectically studied, fair minded and emotionally honest person. He doesn't judge or tend to complain, but if he feels party to negativity, he might withdraw a bit, pull back into his shell a little. I've seen him judge himself harshly on many occasions, despite the fact that he's consistently impressed and entertained me, so it's hard for me to understand why he doesn't think more of himself. Sometimes, especially when he and I (along with others) go off on a philosophical tangent or something and drive people away from a thread, I learn the oddest and most interesting things from him. T, I think your armor shines more brightly than you give it credit for.
*Lancecastor's a different breed of duck, and one that sometimes exasperates me. With his on-the-fly posting style, ongoing banter and verbal jabs, and a stream of consciousness that runs very quickly, he's practically my exact opposite, which means I find it hard to know how to "read" his posts; often I'm unsure what's a joke and what's meant in seriousness. And, I've been snarky to him a few times as a result. How is this complimentary to him, you might ask? Well, to his ongoing credit, he doesn't seem to hold a grudge easily--he's not one to take a BB exchange too seriously or to hold onto petty conflicts. Having had time to see him settle in around here, he's growing on me
It is both refreshing and necessary, I think, for someone to come through and stick a pin in our ballooning insularity, poke us/me a little when we/I start getting a little...inflated. It's not an easy role to take on, though, being the one with the pin, and I'm just now starting to really understand the implications of that. So, thanks for sticking by your guns, Lance.
*CarolineOh is the absolute cat's pajamas. She's welcoming and supportive and thoughtful, in both senses. I've seen her do a little of most every kind of thread--serious discussion, flirting, side conversations, board politics, personal narrative, all of it. And in all of them, she treats people with respect but seems to know where she draws the line and starts speaking up for herself, her opinions or her beliefs. It's tough, striking a balance and trying to be nice without being a doormat, tougher still if you have opinions and like to discuss them with others. And I think she manages it remarkably. The grace with which she has handled tremendous disparity between the ups and the downs of her recent months speaks of an emotional strength and a willful stripe of survivor that I admire and respect greatly. Caroline, you're quite a lady and quite a woman.
*monster666 starts wonderfully thought provoking threads--and even more impressively, he keeps up with them, reads and seems to really think about what other people have to say. He's articulate, sensitive, and serious in expressing his very level-headed and well examined ideas, but he's also funny as hell when he wants to be--both on his own and with the good Doctor and/or Spectre. He has been extravagantly nice to me in posts, which certainly doesn't hurt.
He has a nice way of pulling it off and making it feel sincere, though. And, more importantly, that flatteringly kind light seems to shine on the world in general--he just seems to have a very warm heart. monster, I suspect your beastly-trappings protect a very positive and loving spirit.

That's a start, anyway. I'm setting a challenge to myself to keep this thread on the first page until I've posted about everyone that posts in the Forum, which is somewhere between highly unlikey and completely impossible, but is also a very nice idea.
Please, join in and let's spread around a little genuine positive energy. It's remarkably fun, actually.
