I was just wondering, when you delete pics off a digital camera, are they gone or are they still on the memory card? Can you recover them?

depends on the camera......

we have an HP 620, and when we DL to the comps it asks if we want to del everything.....

most cameras when you del from the mem the pic is lost though.

on the high end "professional" cameras, you are given the choice to permanently del or just set aside in a different area of the mem

hope this helps

re

Well mine just asks if you're sure you wish to delete, then you hit yes, doesn't say anything about setting aside. How would access them if it did?

Photos on memory cards can be recovered after deletion. Similar the way windows simply removes the entry from the FAT table but is still retrievable in segments that have not been written over. Most digital cameras format to some FAT so other operating systems can see them when you take the memory out of your camera and into a reader.

To cover yourself a file eraser program that over writes the whole hard disk or any media with 1 and 0 many times over effectively erasing the images or files for good.

My book shows this memory card reader that you insert the memory card into, then into the computer, I don't have one of those, any way I can do it without?

Depends. If it's a standard SD disk, you can get an SD -> USB converter for around $10 and it works similar to a jump drive then. My husband uses this a lot with his PDA and his camera.

re

It says in the instruction manual for the camera, "once you erase images they cannot be retreived"

Here's why I was worried, I borrowed a friends camera, used it to take some lets say, photos I would rather they did not know about. They said they were letting a friend do some work with the camera, copying photos etc, was concerned some of the ones I took may show-up, should I be?

you could use the format feature avaible on almost all camras
of course that would delete any other photos they had on there as well
by permanatly destroying the Alocation table on the card and recreating it
after that you'd need to know the sectors you'd want to extract

not worth the hassle after that anyways

I agree; the format command in the camera's menu will totally erase all images on the card.

But if you don't want to erase them all, but DO want to be sure you've completely obliterated your "special" photos, try this: Delete your "special" photos, then take a bunch of random pictures until the card is full. THEN delete those random ones. They might be recoverable, but the "special" ones will be completely gone.

Good luck! And don't forget to post a copy here!

switch to advanced mode
go to tools -> secure shredder

drag and drop the files into there and shred them :)

Instead of the card reader, which I can't afford, I use an SD card adapter. I stick the memory card into a surrogate floppy, and then stick that into my computer. Save the files on your comptuer before deleting them off the memory card. I also have a pc card adapter for my laptop.

re:Camera Question

Next time why not just go and get your own memory card for the camera.
Replace theirs with yours, take the pics, then swap them back. They are so inexpensive, it may be worth it given the stress of wondering if your pics are still on their card. I'd use a totally different brand of card too, so there is no chance of mixup with family and "fun" pics. If all the pics on the card are to be erased, then I think you could do a quick format of the memory card to erase all the pics too.
