WTF is "Boxing Day". I know it falls on December 26, but what IS it?

How come you get it and we don't?

Just curious. Oh, and jealous.

Boxing Day

In English-speaking countries, the day following Christmas Day is called 'Boxing Day'. This word comes from the custom which started in the Middle Ages around 800 years ago: churches would open their 'alms boxe' (boxes in which people had placed gifts of money) and distribute the contents to poor people in the neighbourhood on the day after Christmas. The tradition continues today - small gifts are often given to delivery workers such as postal staff and children who deliver newspapers.

PS - Hi stranger!

Thank you Freya. As informative and gracious as always. However, this leads to the second part of my post. In the United States, we speak English, we spell it differently, but still speak it similarly. Why don't we get "Boxing Day"

Man, I feel soooo ripped off right now.

Great history lesson Freya!

Well, here in Quebec it is the day that everyone goes shopping with the money they got for christmas and to exchange their unwanted presents ... I always have to work on that day

Well you guys just suck, that's all.

I think it's just celebrated in present and former colonies of Britain. New Zealand, Australia, England, Canada.

That's because you don't speak English in Quebec. You are still under the thrall of the foul and most foreign French.

Another page I found on it.

Boxing Day is a holiday celebrated in Britain, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada. It falls on December 26th, which is also St. Stephen's Day.

St. Stephen was a little known saint who achieved eternal fame by being the first Christian to be martyred for his faith, and he met his death by stoning.

Boxing Day is so called because on this day it was the customary for tradesmen to collect their Christmas boxes or gifts in return for good service throughout the year. Also, it included giving money and other gifts to charitable institutions, and the needy.

The holiday may date from as early as the Middle Ages, but the exact origin is not known. It may have begun with the Lords and Ladies of England, who gave there Christmas boxes/gifts to their servants on December 26, or maybe by priests, who opened the church's alms (charity boxes), and distributed the contents to the poor and needy.

In England, this day has become part of the celebrations, of being with family.

A day to visit other relations, and to have a rest from the day before, to play fun games. Some families, buy a new game each year, but still bring out the old favourites :)

For some it is good to have the 2 days, as on one of the days you can visit with your parents, and the other day your inlaws :)

St Stephen is the patron saint of horses, so Boxing Day became associated with horse-racing and hunting. Other sports are also held on this day like football and rugby.

Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day is the Christmas season for us here in England.

Dammit, I knew that whole "Declaration of Independance" thing was eventually going to come back and bite us in the ass.

I guess its kind of like moving out of mom's house on bad terms.

Death by stoning? What a great mental image.

St. Stephen: "Like wow, Roman dude. I really, REALLY don't want any more. I am, like, so totally out of it right now. Oh....far out man....there's like this lighted tunnel I see......This is soooo trippy"

Or did you mean using rocks?

Oh fine, pick on the poor ignorant Yank. At least we sent our Frenchmen to the yuccky swampland rather than giving them the eastern part of the country.

The bets still on. When the Av's win, we get Boxing Day.

Canadians are peaceful, happy people - they'll understand. Besides, I'm not going to lose - well unless Cujo falls down on the job. But hopefully that'll be countered by Roy throwing a game or two again.

Rox your mental state is fine - it's me and the big guy betting.

The Candians are not peaceful happy people. They are potential world conquerors in cold storage. If they ever defrost, they have a nefarious plot to put the rest of the planet under the rule of the banner of the"Red Leaf"

They will force everybody to watch hockey and football played on fields that are too long. Cities will be clean. It will be hell on earth.

Believe me. I know all about the Canadians.

I know ALL about the Canadians......

In the US your "Boxing" day is after thanks giving, its when everything is on sale. us its the day after Christmas, things are cheap.

That's another thing. Why do Canadians have thanksgiving on the wrong day. Every decent person knows that thanksgiving falls on the last Thursday of November. Unless the last Thursday falls on a short week. Then Thanksgiving comes on the next to last Thursday in November. Anyway, its the only day the Dallas Cowboys and Detroit Lions are televised nationally at the same time. I suspect is has something to do with a vague conspiracy involving the NFL, Dallas, Detroit, and a cartel which undoubtedly includes some Canadians and the the foul and most foreign French.

But I digress. Everybody in the U.S. knows that the day after the correct Thanksgiving is "Black Friday". This is not to be confused with "Black Wednesday" which is usually not celebrated by anybody except those who held "put" options on thier stock in 1929.
