But, a well regulated Militia is NOT necessary to the security of a free State

The Second Amendment is premised on the assumption that "well regulated Militia" is "necessary to the security of a free State" -- but it's not -- is it? There are countries all around the world that manage to have both freedom and security without any such thing. The police and the Army are so necessary. But the reserve militia is not -- you can tell by the fact that it has never, ever been mobilized. In fact, not even the state National Guards are strictly necessary to our freedom and security -- they're good to have, certainly, in event of natural disaster or civil unrest, and as a reserve of trained troops for wartime -- but we could probably get along without them.

Our Founding Fathers were wrong about some things, and this is apparently one of them.

I saw this post in another thread. It was just as stupid then.;)

Free speech isn't necessary either. Lots of countries don't allow it!

Has anybody managed to define that?

Edit: Other than the somewhat funny Koala?

The Florida Dunce doesn't realize that all of the other nations in the world are not the United States and do not have our Constitution.

So fucking what? That does not mean the men who wrote this particular part of it were right. They weren't.

That is an irrelevant argument. Unless you are implying that the only way to for a nation to be free is to have your Constitution, i.e be the United States of America.

Actually that's exactly what he's saying. Americans are the only free people in the world, we're the only capitalists in history and nobody else has ever freely spoken their mind. Do you not read Lit?

They got it right.

Students of American history understand that the 'professional' American officer in the Revolution were much more interested in their prosperity and recreation than liberty. As is always the case it was the Gomers who did the work and the suffering.

Even the noble Robert E. Lee had his moments of infamy. In a memoir I recently read, immediately after Appomattox Court House, two of Lee's soldiers stopped at a farmhouse to appeal for some food. The mistress graciously welcomed them to her home, invited them to sit on the porch in the shade, and went back to cooking. In a few minutes General Lee appeared, with his sons and groupies, and chased the soldiers off. When the meal was ready the lady wanted to know where her other guests got to, Lee told her he had sent them on their way, and she told him that no one eats till he brings them back.

I realize you've never served a day in the military, but war is heck.

That's what happens when you cancel my X-Box Live account right as Gears of War launches. Shit happens and some of it happens to you.
