Ok. I've watched only snippets of Angel. Does it really compare with BTVS?

and some of the stories are pretty cool ... characters seem to get killed off more often on angel
and there has been a lot of surprises last two seasons on angel

Yes, even though some of the dialogue is corny at times. Last night's episode blew my mind. I cant wait until next week when it's Fred vs the whole of LA.
Fred = uber cuteness.
Xander getting his eye gouged out was probably the best gore I've ever seen on the show, and being in on the philosophy that evil preachers are badass, this new bad guy made me happy in the pants.
