Buddy lists

I'm wondering what does the buddy list do please? How do I access my list? How do I take people off it? In a confused fit of clicking madly at the screen (I use AOL) I accidently added Riff to my list. Sorry if that's messed anything up for Riff, I'm sure you're a great person and all, but how do I get you off my list?
