Broken promises....

Today's the fourth of July
another June has gone by
and when they light up our town I just think
what a waste of gunpowder and sky
I'm certain that I am alone
in harbouring thoughts of our home
it's one of my faults that I can't quell my past
I ought to have gotten it gone
Oh, baby, I wonder -
if when you are older -
someday-
you'll wake up
and say, 'My God, I should have told her -
what would it take?
But now here I am and the world's gotten colder
and she's got the river down which I sold her.'
So that's today's memory lane
with all the pathos and pain
another chapter in a book where the chapters are endless
and they're always the same
a verse, then a verse, and refrain
Oh, baby, I wonder -
if when you are older -
someday-
you'll wake up
and say, 'My God, I should have told her -
what would it take?
But now here I am and the world's gotten colder
and she's got the river down which I sold her.'

One must always consider the circumstances under which the promise was made. It is never wise to break a promise, even a rash one; take it like a gentleman (or lady) and know better next time. But if the promise was of the "I got badgered until I promised something that was unreasonable and irrational" variety, it's a good time to ask if the promisee is someone whose company you should continue to cultivate.

broken promises are the worst, yes, although missed opportunities and dashed hopes are agonizing as well...

Everything is relative, Snoopy.

Let's say I make you the following promise:

"I promise that I am going to get the bouncer at Joe's to come over, tear off your arm, and beat you to death with the wet end."

Now, how distraught would you be, if it should turn out that I do not keep my promise?

Ok, ok, you're right there.

But of course you know I was talking about promises that someone makes with the anticipation of the other person, you know, promises to comfort, help or make this person happy, etc.
