Suddenly, the one thing every American wants is a flu vaccine.

Two years ago, nobody wanted a flu shot. Some of us were intimidated into getting them, by doctors if we were elderly or had compromised immune systems or were otherwise at risk; by our employers, in my case, if a bad flu season was expected.

We made excuses to avoid the needle.

"The shots make people sick."

"They don't work. It's a marketing gimmick."

Then came the Flu Vaccine Shortage of 2003. When word got around that there might not be enough vaccine, people stood in line at clinics, demanding their shots.

This year, the news is that the Brits have reneged on a major shipment of flu vaccine to the U.S., to the extent that there might not be enough for even high-risk patients. And suddenly, everybody wants a flu shot.

Doctors say new patients are making appointments for shots, and are lying to get them, claiming to have ailments that put them at risk for a fatal case of flu.

We demand our right to be innoculated against deadly diseases, damn it. Curse you, limey terrorists.

Sorry. Someone contaminated the shots with Viagra.

Conspiracy theorists - work that one out.

Og

PS. We're short of shots too.

Back to the vitamin thing, then, and common sense. If you aren't sure how to get by without a shot, ask an older person how they did it in the day.

You can't trust the elderly with this one, CDog. They're first in line for shots.

Seriously - we do have a problem in the UK as well.

The supplier found that some of the shots were contaminated so destroyed them.

They supply about 10% of the UK need but 50% of the US requirement. They are working as hard as they can to meet the demand. There should be a couple of weeks delay before supplies are back to normal.

Just hang in there folks.

Canadian Flu Vaccine Not Part of Chiron Withdrawal

. . . "We are not expecting an impact," said Dr. Theresa Tam, an influenza expert with the Public Health Agency of Canada.

Canada buys flu vaccine from domestic manufacturer ID Biomedical of Vancouver and from Aventis Pasteur, headquartered in Lyon, France. ID Biomedical makes flu vaccine at a production facility in Ste-Foy, Que. Aventis vaccine destined for Canada is made in France.

"They are both on schedule to deliver the doses required". . . .

Didn't you hear the president? It's dangerous to rely on drugs made in Third World countries like Canada. As for France, look what their fries have done to our cholesterol.

Are you referring to pommes frites de la liberté?

Edited to add:

Speaking of the third world countries. . . .

I just got a notice from one of my Canadian friends. They have just discovered their latest government scandal.

The government forecast a $1.9 billion surplus, and they were wrong. There was no $1.9 billion surplus at all. It was a $9.1 billion dollar surplus.

I admit that is a sizable a mistake — can’t help wondering whether the Canadian government is perhaps dyslexic — but one has to admire the direction of the error. No politician of any first rate country would ever make such mistake. Well, at least not in THAT direction.

In any case, those third worlders deserve some good news after last week’s trouble with the Chicoutimi*. (Submarine).

* OK. I confess. I had to Google three news stories to learn the correct spelling of the submarine. I then realized most people wouldn’t recognize it. Finally, identified it as a submarine, because after going to the trouble of looking it up, was not about to excise the proper name from my post.
